Troubleshooting is the method of problem solving or fixing the problems. Troubleshooting your computer systems involves various techniques. The method of troubleshooting involves identification of problems or bugs and their exact cause and fixing them. Some troubleshooting methods require troubleshooting software. It is frustrating if you have trouble working with your computer or the system is not functioning properly. Sometimes, the system may shut down every often, work slowly or you may experience problem in opening some of the files. - The first step while troubleshooting your system is identifying the problem or root cause of the problem that is occurring. For this you can use various diagnostic tools that are available in the market. They help in identifying the exact cause without consuming much of your valuable time and ease your task.
- Scanning the entire system using licensed antivirus software can also help in locating any malware such as viruses or bugs that are causing problem to your system. This scanning technique will also help in eliminating these malware permanently from your system. - Many of the problems occur because of installation of new software or hardware. So, before installing a new software or hardware you should check the documentation provided with them. You can check for the “read.me” or “readme.1st” on the installation disks. If you find that the new software or hardware are compatible with your system then only install it and scan your system.
- If your system is in network or a number of peripheral devices are connected to the system, then, to troubleshoot the system, disconnect all the peripheral devices or the system from the network and check whether the problem is with the main unit of the system or is there some other problem.
- You can also boot your system to diagnose the errors. There are two methods of booting your system.

- One method of booting your system is by using the boot floppy. Using a boot floppy will enable you to bypass the special drivers and software that you load when you boot from your hard disk.
- The other way of booting is pressing F8 key when DOS or Windows 95 are booting. This will enable you to bypass the booting of startup files that will enable to troubleshoot a lot of problems. This will help in clean booting of the system.
- Avoid installing beta software or operating system in your system. These are more prone to crashes. If your system contains any beta software then replace them and try debugging your system. Always buy licensed software for your system.
- When troubleshooting your system if you find that the BIOS settings are set more aggressively then change these settings. BIOS memory timings should be set aggressively to increase the performance of the system; this may adversely affect other settings of the system. So, changing these settings to a more conservative value would be more efficient.
- Use proper power management techniques for the system. Improper power management can cause hardware crashes and sometimes software crashes can also be caused because of this. If you find that the power supply to your system is not proper then change the power supply settings immediately or it may be expensive to repair such crashes.
- Some problems need reinstallation of the operating system. But, before uninstalling the operating system, take back-up of your system. Sometimes even reinstalling the software system may not help to solve some critical problems and such problems should be handled by the experts.
Figuring out the exact problem is most important while you are trying to troubleshoot the system. When you have identified the problem then decide whether you are able to troubleshoot the problem, if not hire a professional.
