How to Prevent Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is a disease that is caused because of uncontrolled division of the tissues of the lung. Most of the people think that lung cancer is because of smoking, but there are other factors too that are responsible for causing lung cancer. This article on how to prevent lung cancer will help you to know symptoms of lung cancer and methods to prevent lung cancer.

Lung cancer is responsible for causing about 1.3 million deaths per year annually. Hence it is very essential to know the preventive measures of lung cancer. Here I am giving you the symptoms of lung cancer so that if you are suffering from this disease then you can diagnose it and cure it at an early stage.

As in case of most of the cancers, lung cancer is also cured by using the methods of chemotherapy, radiation therapy and medication if it is at initial stage.

Symptoms of lung cancer:

  • In lung cancer you find difficulty in breathing and there is a severe pain in chest and abdomen.
  • You many also experience chronic coughing and blood during coughing.
  • There may be a large amount of weight loss and the patient may feel difficulty in swallowing. He also suffers from loss of appetite and fatigue.
  • Patient may feel a whistling sound in the respiratory airways while breathing. This is because of the narrowing of some part of the respiratory track.
  • Nail clubbing is also one of the symptoms of lung cancer, but this is not common among all the patients.

How to prevent lung cancer:

Avoid smoking:

  • If you are a smoker then this may be one of the key factors that can be responsible for causing lung cancer. Stop smoking to stay safe from lung cancer.
  • Lung cancer is mostly seen in case of long-term smokers who are exposed to tobacco for a long duration of smoking.

Avoid passive smoking:

  • Even passive smoking can cause lung cancer. Passive smoking is when you are exposed to the tobacco smoke for a long time.
  • In this case the person himself doesn’t smoke but if somebody around him smokes continuously than even he can be affected by lung cancer.
  • In a family if father smokes then his family may also be susceptible to lung cancer due to exposure to smoke.

Eat fresh fruits and vegetables:

  • Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. These fruits and vegetables should include cranberries, strawberries, beans, legumes, etc.
  • These foods are rich in antioxidants and flavonoids that help in repairing cellular damage.
  • They also help in guarding your DNA, so include a lot of these kinds of foods in your diet.

Protect yourself from carcinogens factors:

  • Do not get exposed to carcinogens factors (cancer causing factors) at work. The carcinogens factors at work include gasoline, diesel exhaust, coal products and asbestos.
  • If you are working in such a place where there is probability of getting exposed to such factors then take necessary precautions such as using face masks and getting medical checkups every often, etc.

Stay protected from radon:

  • Radon gas which is an isotope of radioactive elements such as radium and uranium is also responsible for causing lung cancer.
  • This radioactive isotope is released by the breakdown of uranium and radium from the crest of the earth.
  • You can take various precautionary measures to prevent your house from this radon gas.
  • You may ask your constructor for this or look for help online.

Reduce pollution:

  • Pollution is also one of the factors responsible for causing lung cancer. If the air or water contains a large amount of particulate matter in it then it can be a threat to your lungs.
  • This particulate matter includes dust, mercury, sewage from industries, silicon and a variety of pollutants in the air.
  • We must take necessary preventive measures to reduce the chances of lung cancer because of these particulate matters by purifying the air and water as far as possible.

Viruses:

  • Some viruses are also responsible for causing lung cancer.
  • These cancer causing viruses may be present inside our body and they include simian virus, BK virus, human papillomavirus, etc.
  • Regular checkup should be done to check whether your body is affected by any such viruses.

Conduct tests:

  • Chest radiograph is one of the tests that are performed to detect lung cancer.
  • If you are a smoker or even if you don’t smoke you can perform this test once in a while as a preventive measure.
  • However this test is conducted only for the patients who show the symptoms of lung cancer.

How to Prevent Diabetes

Diabetes is the increase in the blood sugar level more than the normal level. Blood contains some amount of sugar within it, but when this level exceeds certain normal levels then it is termed as diabetes. This article on how to prevent diabetes will help you in following proper preventive measures to prevent diabetes. Most of these preventive measures are related to your diet.

Diabetes is caused due to the improper functioning of the beta cells of the islets of langerhans. These cells are responsible for the breakdown of sugar into glucose which is used as energy by our body for performing various activities. When these beta cells don’t function properly, sugar gets saturated into the blood causing diabetes.

Diabetes can be prevented by many methods which are explained below.

How to prevent diabetes:

  • Diabetes can be prevented by preventing the excess intake of sugar. Sugar is very essential for the proper functioning of the body but its excess intake should be avoided. Only a desired quantity of sugar that is necessary for the body should be consumed.
  • Eating a lot of foods that contain carbohydrates in abundant amount can also be a reason for diabetes. Foods such as potato, bread, pasta and white rice contain a large amount of simple carbohydrates. Cut off these foods from your diet.
  • Eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables. It is seen that these fruits and vegetables stimulate the production of insulin that helps in the process of glycation.
  • Consume food that contains fewer amounts of fats. Fats are also responsible for decreasing the functionality of the beta cells that causes diabetes. It is found that obese people are more prone to diabetes as compared to slim people.
  • Exercising regularly will also help you in decreasing the chances of diabetes. Exercising helps you in keeping yourself active and controlling blood circulation and body weight. Proper blood circulation is always beneficial for maintaining a good health.
  • Diabetes is sometimes considered as hereditary i.e. if any of your close descendents have diabetes then there are more chances that you may fall prey to this disease. Check your family history and if there are any cases of diabetes in your family then take necessary precautions so that you don’t suffer from the same disease.
  • Increasing age may also be a reason for diabetes. If you have crossed the age of 45 then it is necessary that you get yourself checked regularly for diabetes. People in younger age are less susceptible to this disease.
  • Many of the times during pregnancy the chances of getting diabetes in the mothers increases. Therefore mothers need to take extra care during pregnancy following a proper diet that is suggested by the doctor.
  • Low or high blood pressure may also lead to diabetes. If you are a suffering from low or high blood pressure then you need carry out check up for diabetes too as a precautionary measure.
  • Monitor your blood pressure regularly as it can also be one of the causes of diabetes.
  • Less intake of sugar is also very dangerous to life, so be careful that you don’t decrease the amount of sugar in your diet to such an extent that it is injurious to your health. Low blood sugar may sometimes lead to sudden death.
  • If you are already suffering from diabetes then take proper medication from the doctor. You can use natural sweeteners instead of directly consuming sugar. These natural sweeteners add a sweet taste to your food without increasing the level of glucose in your food.

How to Prevent Colon Cancer

Colon cancer is the cancer related to your large intestine. It is also termed as colorectal cancer and large bowel cancer. This form of cancer is very dangerous as it does not shows any types of symptoms in the initial stage whereas some may experience cramps, loss of weight and stools in later stages. This article on how to prevent colon cancer will help you in preventing colon cancer giving you simple tips.

This cancer of colon may sometimes affect the cells of rectum and appendix if not treated on time. It may cause changes in the bowel movement, cause lower and upper gastrointestinal bleeding, constipation, vomiting, bowel obstruction, etc. You can prevent colon cancer by following the tips that are given below.

How to prevent colon cancer:

Reduce exposure to radioactive radiations:

  • It is found that some of the radioactive radiations are responsible for causing colon cancer, so try to reduce exposure to radioactive radiations.
  • These radioactive radiations such as uranium and radon penetrate the body and affect the growth of cells i.e. increase the growth of tissues in the colon causing their uncontrolled division, this condition results in colon cancer.

Do not smoke:

  • Smoking is found to be a major cause of almost all types of cancer. It is also responsible for causing colon cancer.
  • During smoking tobacco and smoke are inhaled that affects the colon of the stomach.
  • Tobacco is found to increase the size of the polyp (a risk factor for causing colon cancer). Bigger the size of the polyp higher is the risk of colon cancer, so avoid smoking.

Age:

  • Increasing age is also responsible for increasing the chances of colon cancer.
  • It is found that people above the age group of 50 are susceptible to this disease.
  • So, if your age is more than 50 then get yourself screened, so that you can avoid any complications.

How to Prevent Air Pollution

Air pollution is one of the major forms of pollution that every country is facing today. There are other forms of pollution too such as water pollution and sound pollution but the problem of air pollution is most serious problem. Knowing how to prevent air pollution, you can easily prevent air pollution and reduce the chances of various diseases that are caused because of air pollution.

Air pollution is responsible for a number of respiratory disorders such as lung cancer, asthma, heart diseases etc. It is also causes severe headache, nausea, vomiting and constipation. Some of the chronic diseases are also caused because of air pollution. Air pollution is responsible for increasing the cases of cancer due the particulate pollutants in the air.

All the methods explained below require minimum effort and can help in creating a pollution free environment.

How to prevent air pollution:

Plant trees:

  • Planting trees is one of the easiest methods of reducing pollution. It is noticed through years that trees are cut on a large scale which is a major cause of air pollution.
  • Trees inhale carbon dioxide which is released by vehicles, industries and other sources of air pollution.
  • They are the only natural sources that help in reducing the pollution due to carbon dioxide and help in releasing oxygen that is very essential for us.

Less use of fuels:

  • Fuels such as petroleum and burning of fossil fuels emit a lot of pollutants such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide and nitrous oxide.
  • Less use of these fuels will also help in reducing the air pollution.
  • Instead of these sources of energy try to use other safe and natural sources of energy such as solar energy and tidal energy.

Reduce burning of coal:

  • Coal is used on a large scale in the industries this releases a large amount of soot and smoke in the atmosphere, so try to use some alternatives to reduce the amount of coal released from the industries.
  • If you don’t have any alternatives then try to upgrade the industries with some effective appliances that will be helpful in reducing air pollution.

Reduce performing radioactive explosions:

  • Radioactive explosions are the most dangerous source of air pollution.
  • Effect of pollution due to radioactive pollution lasts for a longer period of time and is difficult to eliminate as compared to other forms of air pollution.
  • These radioactive explosions release radioactive isotopes such as uranium, radium and polonium. Once released in the atmosphere it is very difficult to eliminate this type of pollutants from the atmosphere.

Reduce the activities that release particulate pollutants in the air:

  • Various activities such as grinding of stones, construction of building and roads also release particulate pollutants such as silicon, asbestos in the air.
  • Reduce performing such activities to decrease the amount of particulate pollutants in the air.
  • These pollutants when enter into lungs through respiratory track cause cancer.

Use smoke controlling appliances in vehicles:

  • Vehicles should be having smoke controlling appliances to reduce the amount of pollution in the atmosphere.
  • If possible avoid use of vehicles and use bicycle.

Get your vehicles checked regularly:

  • Get your vehicles checked regularly to control pollution. Maintain vehicles in proper condition.
  • Do not use same vehicle for a prolonged period because it may increase the emission of pollutants in the atmosphere due to deterioration of parts.
  • If your car is emitting a lot of smoke then replace its gas pump, air filter and keep your tires inflated properly.

Use ethanol in petrol:

  • It is found that when a considerable amount of ethanol is used along with petrol, it reduces the amount of pollution, so mix some amount of ethanol in petrol always.

Reduce industrialization:

  • Industrialization is causing increase in pollution and is also responsible for cutting of forests.
  • Reducing industrialization will also help in reducing air pollution.

Do not cut forests:

  • Deforestation or cutting of forests is increasing the risk of air pollution.
  • Forests are mainly cut for industrialization and urbanization. Reduce cutting of forests and plant more and more trees to reduce air pollution.

Create awareness among people:

  • Use various media such as television, newspaper and other media through which you can reach a large number of people within less time and explain them the hazards of air pollution and encourage them to reduce air pollution by practicing various preventive measures.

Make use of recycled products:

  • Try to use products which are created by recycling and practice recycling products.
  • Try to recycle paper bags and wastes from industries and kitchen.

Save energy:

  • During the generation of electricity a large number of gaseous pollutants are released in the atmosphere, so save energy.
  • Switch off all the electrical appliances when not in use, use energy saving products and make less use of air-conditioners.

There are still many more small precautionary measures that will help you in breathing a pollution free and safe air and save many lives.

How to Calculate your Social Security Benefits

For the old age, some social securities are very important, as in the old age, when you will not be able to work then these securities like retirement plans will benefit you and make your life easier. Social security actually means a social insurance program which provides social protection or protection against socially recognized conditions which include poverty, old age, unemployment, disability and other things. Read and know more about how to calculate your social security benefits.

Social security can be referred to

  • Social insurance: In recognition of contribution to an insurance scheme, when people have benefits or services, it is called social insurance. It normally includes provision for retirement pensions, disability insurance, unemployment insurance and survivor benefits.
  • Income maintenance: Income maintenance includes the distribution of cash in the interruption of employment which includes retirements, unemployment and disability.
  • Services: This refers to those services which are provided by administration that is responsible for social security. These services may differ from country to country as the priorities are different in different countries. It may include medical care, industrial relations and even some aspects of social work.
  • Basic security: This term is equivalent to access to basic necessities as food, shelter, clothes, education, medical care and money.

Social insurance: Social insurance is defined as a government-sponsored insurance program which is defined as an act, serves a defined population and is funded by premiums or taxes paid by participants or by someone else on behalf of participants.

Income maintenance: It is basically based on five main types of program. They are

  • Social insurance
  • Means tested benefits: This consists of the financial help provided to those who cannot cover their basic needs, such as food, clothing and housing due to unemployment, poverty or lack of sufficient income.
  • Non-contributory benefits: In some countries, there are several schemes for veterans of armed forces, people with disabilities and very old people.
  • Discretionary benefits: This includes those benefits which are based on the discretion of an official, or you can say a social worker.
  • Universal benefits: These benefits are also called as demo grants or categorical benefits. Without a test of means or need, when non-contributory benefits are given to whole section of population, it is called demo grants or universal benefits. Family allowance and the public pension in New Zealand which is known as New Zealand Superannuation are examples of universal benefits.

Social protection: Social protection means a set of benefits which are available through the state or market or civil society and households or through combining each of them, to the individual to reduce multidimensional deprivation.

These are the types of social security benefits.

To calculate your social security benefit, you have to go through two steps which are:

  1. Calculation of AIME i.e. average indexed monthly earnings.
  2. Determination of PIA i.e. primary insurance amount.

The PIA is base for calculation of the benefits which are to be paid at the retirement.

Average indexed monthly earning

Indexing of your earning depends upon the year in which you become eligible to receive retirement benefits. The age fixed for it is 62 yrs. If you completed your age of 62 yrs in 2010 then 2010 is the year of your eligibility. But earnings are always indexed to the average wage index of that time when you reach the age of 60 yrs. If you complete your 62 yrs of age in 2010, then your income of previous working years will be indexed with the average wage index of 2008.

  • For determining the indexing factor for a previous year, the wage index of the base year should be divided by the wage index of that specific year.
  • The income of that year in which you completed your age of 60 yrs and after that will not be indexed. They are taken at their face value.
  • When each year’s income is indexed, the highest 35 years of indexed earnings are added up.
  • After addition, the whole sum is then divided by 420. The result you get is your AIME.

Primary insurance amount

After determining AIME, the next step is to calculate your PIA. The PIA is determined by adding three separate percentages of portions of AIME. These portions are called bend points. These points depend upon the year, when you reach the age of 62 yrs.

Social security benefits are not meant to provide full financial support after retirement. It is just to provide a helping hand to the beneficiary.

How to Calculate Withholding Tax

To withhold or deduct tax from the payment and pay that tax to the government is called withholding tax. This article will elaborate on how to calculate withholding tax through easy to follow steps. Generally, withholding tax is applied on employment income in most of the jurisdictions. In some jurisdictions, withholding tax is required on payments of interest or dividends also.

In many jurisdictions there are some additional withholding tax obligations as if the recipient of the income is a resident of a different jurisdiction. In these circumstances withholding tax sometimes applies on rent, royalties or even the sale of the real estate property. Government sometimes imposes additional withholding tax on industries where tax evasion is perceived to be common or if the recipient has been delinquent in filing tax returns.

Generally the payroll tax accounting field includes withholding tax in it. It is important to know how to calculate this amount manually to prevent possible computer errors. If not calculated correctly, withholding tax can cause severe damages which are enough to close businesses.

Steps for calculation

  • You will need a payroll accounting software. A payroll accounting system will help in the calculations of withholding tax. Many software programs come with the preprogrammed tax rates which are updated as tax rates change. It is automatically calculated by the software program.
  • Payroll documents: You will need employee payroll period information to calculate withholding tax. It is usually obtained from time sheets, time cards and date of hire. This information contains the number of hours worked and rate of pay per hour.

  • Gross payroll: Once you find out the hours worked and rate of pay, just multiply these data together. Withholding taxes are calculated on this gross payroll for hourly workers. It will be the annual salary divided by the pay periods for salaried workers.

  • Exemption Amounts: You will have to find out the employees’ exemption amounts from the W 9. The W 9 contains the employee filing status like married or single. If you are using payroll accounting software then this information would be entered into the software program on date of hire. For the calculation of federal and sometimes state withholding tax, exemption amount is needed.

  • Governmental tax documents: The IRS publication Circular E is needed for federal withholding and FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act) taxes. It includes tax tables for federal withholding taxes and tax rate calculations which are needed for determining FICA taxes. Every state has its own process to calculate withholding taxes for state withholding tax. Consult with the appropriate taxing officer for what you need for computation.

  • Calculate federal withholding: The Circular E has tax tables for federal withholding. Just look at the gross payroll amount and number of exemptions to find out federal withholding. It is needed to know the employee filing status (like single or married) and pay period (such as weekly or monthly). In this process no calculations is required.

  • Calculate state withholding: Every state does not have withholding taxes. You will require gross payroll figures to compute state withholding taxes. Contact your state’s taxing officer for what else is required to comply with tax requirements as it is different in each state.

  • Calculate FICA withholding: FICA tax involves Social Security and Medicare taxes. Information to calculate FICA taxes can be found in the IRS Circular E, also. The stipulated rate in effect at current time is multiplied by gross pay. This rate changes time to time and it is totally the employer’s responsibility to keep it alongside the rate in effect.

  • Calculate total withholding tax: Add the total federal, state and FICA withholding amount in context to calculate the total withholding tax. The data obtained is the withholding tax liability on the balance sheet. Here, the company will be acting as a collection agency for the affected taxing officer until the funds are paid.

How to Calculate Volume of a Cube

A cube is a solid object that consists of six square faces. Each of these three faces meet at common point called the vertex of the cube. A cube is a geometrical three dimensional solid object. This article on how to calculate volume of a cube will help you in calculating volume of a cube using simple formula.

In case of a cube all the sides are of equal length and if you separate a single surface of a cube from its other faces then you will get the shape of the square. Calculating volume of a cube is just a matter of fraction of seconds.

Formula for calculating volume of a cube is given as,

Volume of a cube = a3

  • In the above formula, “a” is the measure of the length of the side of a cube whose volume is to be calculated.
  • The volume of a cube is expressed in terms of cubic units such as m3, cm3, etc.
  • If you want to calculate the volume of the cube then measure the length of one of the sides of the cube. It doesn’t really matter which side you are measuring, because all the sides are of equal length.
  • Place the value of the measured side of the cube in the above formula i.e. find out the cube of the side of cube.
  • This is the value of the volume of the cube.

Example:

Suppose the length of one of the sides of the cube is 12 m, then calculate the volume of the cube.

Volume of a cube = a3

Therefore,

Volume of a cube = 123

= 1728 m3

You can practice and calculate the volume of a cube for variable lengths of the sides of a cube. Using online calculators for finding the cube of the value will also help you if the numbers are too big.

How to Calculate Volume of a Cone

Every one of us is familiar with the shape of a cone. A cone is a three dimensional geometric shape that has a broad base at one end and a narrow tapering end on the other side. A cone is a solid figure that is bounded by a plane base. This article on how to calculate volume of a cone will help you in calculating the volume of cone using simple formula.

The formula for calculating volume of cone is given as,

V = (1/3) π r2 h

In the above formula,

  • “V” represents the volume of the cone
  • “π” is a constant whose value is 3.14 or 22/7
  • “ r” is the radius of the base of the cone
  • “h” is the height of the cone

Volume of the cone is measured in cubic units.

If you want to calculate the volume of a cone you need to calculate the radius of the base of the cone and the height of the cone. The height of the cone is measured through the axis of the cone. The axis of the cone is the line that passes through the center of the base of the cone and passes through the converging point of the tapering end.

If you have been given the radius and height of the cone then you can insert these values in the above formula and calculate volume of the cone.

Example:

Suppose you have been given the value of the radius of the cone as 4 cm and height of the cone as 3.5 cm, then you can calculate the volume of the cone as follows,

Given:

Radius = r = 4 cm

Height = h = 3.5 cm

Volume of a cone = (1/3) π r2 h

Therefore,

Volume of a cone = (1/3) × 3.14 × 42 × 3.5

= 58.6133 cm3

You can also use online calculators for calculating volume of a cone inserting the values of radius and height cone into the required fields and click on calculate button. Online calculators can be used if the calculations are big enough.
