Causes of swelling:

  • Infection, injury and sometimes some heart disease
  • Improper blood circulation within the body. People who are ill for a long time also have swelling throughout the body.
  • Sometimes insect bites can also result in swelling. This swelling is sometimes less while sometimes the swelling is more and last for many days.
  • Allergies to certain foods and drugs can also cause body swelling. Swelling on the face, hands and legs is commonly observed in this case.
  • Disease such as scleroderma, lupus, and arthritis cal also make your body lumpy.

  • If you have to stand for a long time in one place, wear supportive stockings that will help you prevent pooling of the fluids in your legs.
  • Body fluids move down due to the gravity. You should elevate your legs at least for sometime at night while sleeping, so that all the organs of the body get enough amounts of fluids. You can do this by keeping a pillow beneath your legs and elevating your legs at least 7 to 8 inches from your head.
  • Regular exercises such as running, jogging, cycling, etc, will also help in proper blood circulation and improve your cardio vascular functions. If you follow workouts in gyms, make sure you follow proper techniques while doing so. Many people have swelling on the body due to improper techniques used while exercising.

The toxins that are induced in the body through intake of alcohol and cigarette get into the blood stream and spread throughout the body which can cause swelling in the body.
  • Sufficient sleep and plenty of rest are the primary preventive measures for any kind of abnormal functions in the body. Swelling can worsen if you do not give your body plenty of rest.
  • Do not wear tight clothes. Tight clothing and uncomfortable clothing will restrict blood circulation to certain parts of the body which can be a reason of body swelling.
  • Try to maintain cool atmospheres around you and also take some steps to reduce the heat within your body. Heat and humidity in the atmosphere are also some of the major reasons for swelling.
  • If certain part of your body has swelling, then elevating that part of the body for some time will help reducing the swelling.
  • Body swelling that is caused due to insect bites will go off itself after some days. If the swelling doesn’t reduce, then you will have to take some medications prescribed by the doctor.
  • Body swelling caused due to the heart disease, arthritis, obesity, liver disease can be controlled by controlling diet and medical help.
  • To be on the safer side, seek help from your doctor to identify the exact cause of swelling, if you have them frequently and get them treated. Some swelling problems can call up on serious medical conditions.

How to Prevent Macular Degeneration

Macula is the central portion of the retina. Macular degeneration or defect in the macula is usually caused in old age people. This defect leads to loss of vision in which an individual is unable to identify faces and finds it difficult to read. It is essential that you take some preventive measures at early age and know how to prevent macular degeneration.

Macular degeneration is also termed as age related macular degeneration or AMD. Other activities can be done as usual because the rest of the part of the retina is not damaged. This disease occurs in two forms, dry and wet. Dry AMD is caused due to the breakdown of light sensitive cells, whereas wet Macular AMD is caused due to the abnormal growth of blood vessels in the retina.

If you notice any of the symptoms that are given below, then you are at the risk of having macular degeneration. Take proper preventive measures as early as possible to reduce the severity of the defect.

Symptoms of macular degeneration:

  • This defect usually begins as a white spot within the retina, which further grows large enough so that the images that we look at appear blurred.
  • Trouble in discriminating colors, as there is very slow recovery of visual function after exposure to the bright light.
  • There may appear a grid of straight lines when to try to visualize things and there is also loss of central vision which can further lead to rapid loss of vision.

Who is at risk?

  • Increasing age increases the risk of macular degeneration.
  • Excessive exposure to sunlight can also damage the macula within the retina.
  • Any heart disease such as high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis can also cause damage to your eyes.
  • Smoking and a family history of defect can also be a reason for macular disease.

There is no cure for macular degeneration. Therefore, you have to take proper preventive measures to prevent the disease.

Preventing macular degeneration or AMD:

  • If you have any cardiovascular disorders, get them treated immediately. These defects cause a great impact on the eyes. If there is no proper blood supply to the nerves of your eyes, they cannot function properly and can cause macular degeneration.
  • It is observed that people who suffer from hypertension are at greater risk of having this defect. The fluctuations in the blood pressure are responsible for this.
  • Regular cardiovascular activities such as walking, jogging, swimming, aerobics and yoga are helpful for improving your cardiovascular activities.
  • Sufficient supply of vitamin is very important to reduce the risk of any kind of retinal disorder. Vitamin E and Vitamin A are the most important vitamins that are necessary for your eyes. Fish and cod liver oil is the rich sources of these vitamins. Include them in abundance in your diet.
  • Fish are also a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids. This is also necessary to make your vision strong and reduce the risk of AMD.
  • Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables that are rich in carotenoids such as lutein and zeaxanthin, zinc, copper should be included in your diet. Foods that contain these nutrients are spinach, collard greens and kale. Include at least one serving of such foods in your diet daily.
  • Do not expose your eyes to sunlight for a long time. Whenever going out in sunlight, wear sunglasses to protect your eyes. Don’t look directly to the sun. Small children usually try this. Restrict your children from doing this.
  • Do not look directly and closely to any high intensity sources of light such as tube lights, fluorescent lights, etc.
  • Maintain safe distances from books while reading and read where there is adequate light so that you do not strain your eyes excessively. It is safe to maintain a distance of at least 12 to 15 inches from the books while reading.
  • Do not expose your eyes to the harmful chemicals that are present in the atmosphere. If there is excessive pollution on the streets, then wear protective glasses that will prevent the direct contact of the dust and dirt with the eyes.
  • Go for regular eye check-ups to an ophthalmologist. If you are noticing blurred images while looking at people or reading, then take immediate treatment.
  • Use Amsler grid to check your vision at home. An early diagnosis means better treatment. Check both the eyes using this grid. Doctors use this grid to check macular degeneration, which is easily available online or you can take one from your doctor.
  • If any of the grids look blurred, wavy or distorted, or any of the lines look missing and non-uniform, there is a defect in your vision.
  • Cigarette smoking should also be prohibited. This will also increase the risk of AMD as you age.
  • Rest your eyes for some time. If you have to sit for a long time in front of computer system, then take breaks in between.
  • There are exercises meant for eyes that should be done at least ten to fifteen minutes daily to improve the blood circulation to your eyes.

Follow the tips that are given above to prevent AMD or macular degeneration. These tips can also be followed to prevent any kind of eye disorders.

Due to this the internal clock of the body is not in sync with the external clock. People who cross several time zones within a short span, such as pilots and frequent travelers need to know how to prevent jet lag. Once occurred the symptoms last for at least 2 to 3 days.

Brain cells control the biological functions with the brain that get adjusted according to the time zone in which we are living. The brain cell controls all the functions including when we eat and when we sleep. If you are in a different time zone, then the regular rhythm of dawn and dusk to which your body got acclimated, experiences improper timings in this new time zones.

  • Disturbance in circadian rhythm

The environment within the air planes also causes a great impact on the body of the person. Low humidity within the planes, continuous vibrations, noise, pressurization and cramped environment contribute to the symptoms of jet lag. These include sinus, muscle cramps, dizziness, inflammation in the feet and legs, dry eyes and noise causes earaches and sinus.

Tips to prevent jet lag:

  • Try getting adjusted to times zones you are about to travel following the sleep-wake patters of the place you are about to travel.  Do not make drastic changes at once; slow changes in your lifestyle will help you get acquainted in a better way.
  • You should know when the day begins and when the sunsets in the time zone you are about to travel. Sleep when it is night over there and wake up when it is day. If this is not possible for you regularly, then you can try this at least when you are in the plane.
  • While you are about to board in the flight, adjust your watch according to the timings of your destination.

  • Get plenty of rest: Rest well before you start your journey. This will help you get better acquainted with the external changes that occur when you shift yourself from one time zone to another.
  • Healthy diet: A healthy diet and good choice of food is also advised. Get plenty of necessary nutrients to meet the body requirements so that the symptoms shown in jet lag are not so severe.
  • Avoid drugs: Drinking alcohol and cigarette smoking should be strictly avoided as this causes imbalances in the body. Excessive consumption of caffeine should also be avoided. Especially, such drinks should be avoided in planes. Alcohol has greater impacts on the body when you are in the plane as it has on the ground. The effect is about 3 times more.
  • Use ear plugs: When in the plane use ear phones to reduce the impact of the noise that is caused on your ears. If you do not use ear plugs to block the noise, this affects the biological conditions of your body.
  • Listen to music: Listening to music while sleeping in the plane is also a good option to stay away from the noise.
  • Look for comfort: Look for comfort inside the plane. This will help you in preventing jet lag. Try doing things that will make you feel comfortable; turn on the AC, push your seats back and get plenty of rest, remove your shoes and relax as you do in your bedroom.
  • Get warm water on your body: Having shower will help relaxing your body, so get a shower with warm water before you start your journey and in between if you have a halt of some time. This will increase the blood circulation and relax your body.

How to Prevent Tendonitis

Tendonitis is the inflammation caused to the tendons due to strain in muscles. This usually happens when we stretch our muscles beyond the limit. Tendons are muscles that help in attaching muscles with the bones. The inflammation that occurs to the huge tendons is termed as tendonitis which can be prevented if you know how to prevent tendonitis.

Large tendons are present in your heel, elbow and knee. The tendonitis that is caused in the heel bone is referred as Achilles tendonitis; in the knee it is called as patellar tendonitis as it affects the patellar tendon. If there is any disturbance caused in the smooth gliding motion of the tendons in this region, tendons get inflamed. These injuries are more common in upper and lower limbs.

Players and old age people have frequent problem of tendonitis. They need to take proper precautions. Tendonitis can further lead to many problems, and the severity of symptoms varies greatly, depending upon the severity of the injury and the part of the body injured.

You may notice tenderness and swelling over the tendons. You may also have pain while moving your hands and legs. The muscle movements also cause movement of the tendons.

Causes of tendonitis:

  • The tendons that are damaged have poor supply of blood. If that is the case, the tissues may damage and may lose sensitivity, if the injury is frequent.
  • The damaged tendons do not get sufficient supply of oxygen and nutrients. This can completely damage the tendons.
  • If the tendons do not have a smooth surface to glide on then they may have frequent inflammation, which can even paralyze that part of the body causing numbness in that portion.

How to prevent tendonitis:

Tendonitis prevention for players:

Players can prevent the risk of tendonitis by taking proper precautionary measures while playing.

  • Make sure that you are physically and mentally fit before playing. If you are not, then avoid playing or participating in sports. The risk of getting injured increases if you are not fit. A small injury is enough to cause a great deal of damage.
  • Warm up exercises are a must before you enter the ground for actual play. These warm up exercises will help in providing the flexibility in your muscles and joints so that you are less prone to injuries.
  • Stretching exercises should also be done after the game. These are the cool-down exercises that are necessary to reduce the strain from the tendons after the game is over.
  • Make sure that you follow proper techniques while performing these warm up exercises. Different sports require different warm up exercises. Take professional help if required.
  • Use protective pads to cover the area such as ankle, heel, and elbow that are prone to injuries while playing.
  • If you are already injured, resume playing for some days or months unless you recover completely. If you exaggerate, the condition may become even worse.
  • A healthy diet to have healthy muscles is very important. Include food that is rich in proteins, vitamins and calcium.
  • Understanding the rules and following them properly is important as each sport has its own rules and regulations.
  • Do not undergo heavy training few days prior to participating in sports. This will increase your stress and you may become physically unfit to play.
  • Get enough sleep of at least 6 to 7 hours every day, especially few weeks before your competition begins.
  • Wear appropriate sportswear that is designed for a particular sport.

Preventing tendonitis for aged people:

As you age, the weakness in your body is the main reason for such injuries. You can prevent them following few precautions.

  • People who have crossed the age of 50 have a greater risk of tendonitis, as their muscles weaken due to age and poor blood supply to the tendons.
  • Such people should go for regular check-ups to the doctors and follow a healthy diet that is planned by their doctor.
  • They should increase the content of calcium, fibers and necessary vitamins in their diet.
  • They should not get involved in any aggressive movements that can stretch their muscles beyond limit and increase strain within them.
  • As you age the synovial fluid present within the joints that helps in lubricating the joins also lessens. Take proper precautions to maintain the fluid content in your joints to a normal level.
  • Following mild exercises such as walking, and stretching their body parts to an extent they can bear, will help them strengthen muscles.
  • Make sure that there is proper blood circulation throughout your body and get plenty of fresh oxygen such that your heart functions well.

If you have tendonitis you can treat it by applying ice packs, compressing the area with elastic bandages, perform regular movements in small angles, using pain killers to get relief from pain.
