How to Adjust to Night Shift

You get a nice job, but it is a 24X7 job environment, and you have never worked in a night shift before; you must therefore know how to adjust to night shift. It becomes necessary to adjust your body to work in nightshifts. You need to get used to staying awake at night, and adjust your body and lifestyle accordingly. In the initial days of the job, you might find it difficult. It might also lead to health issues like nausea, giddiness, stress and digestion problems. Below are some simple tips that will help you adjust to nightshifts.

How to adjust to night shifts?

  • You need to get adjusted to staying awake at nights. If you have some time before joining the job, you can utilize this to get yourself adjusted to it. A week before the job, try staying awake at night and sleep during the day.
  • Avoid rotating shifts. Switching again and again from day shift to night shift and vice versa will make it difficult for your body to adjust.
  • Do not consume sleeping pills, or resort to any such measures to sleep during the day. This will help you sleep, but will not help you to adjust your body to the new routine.
  • It will be difficult for you to sleep during the day time, as there will be sunlight, noise, people moving around the house, etc. You need to get adjusted to all this. For this, you can stuff cotton in your ears to avoid any disturbances and use an eye band to cover your eyes. This will help you to get adjusted to sleeping during daytime.
  • Besides, you can use dark colored curtains in your room. This will help you to create night like darkness during daytime.
  • Set a proper schedule for yourself. A proper time to have your breakfast, meals and a fixed time to go to bed. If your shift starts at 11 pm and ends at 7 am in the morning, try getting adjusted according to this shift time.
  • Do not forget to set the alarm clock so that you wake up on time. If you want a sound sleep, you should sleep without any thoughts in your mind. If you are worried about waking up on time, you won’t be able to sleep well. Also, it is important that you wake up when your alarm rings. Try getting used to it.
  • A few minutes of meditation before going to sleep will help you relax and calm your mind.
  • A nap of 15-20 minutes before work will help you stay awake through out the night.
  • Besides adjusting your body to this routine, you need to know that your eating habits will change. However, continue taking similar amounts of calories as you always do, and opt for healthy food to avoid any health issues.

A little effort and you will get used to night shifts and be able to perform well.

How to Adjust Thermostat

In cooler regions of the world, or places where it is cold for a major part of the year, thermostats are usually installed at homes or offices. The thermostats help regulate the temperature of the interiors. Not only in cold regions, but in also regions where the temperatures are high or fluctuate usually, thermostats regulate the temperature. A thermostat switches on or off the heating or cooling devices to regulate the temperatures in the interiors. If you too have a thermostat installed in your office or home, you might need to adjust it at times. For this, it is necessary for you to know how to adjust a thermostat, so that you do not need to call your mechanic or service guy again and again for these adjustments in the thermostat.

Thermostats control temperatures using sensors. These are usually a component of an air conditioner or heater. The sensor fit in the thermostat detects the temperature and adjusts the temperature in the interiors accordingly. Latest thermostats can be adjusted by changing its programming. However, it is not so easy for the old ones. Given below is a procedure that will help you adjust the thermostat.

How to adjust the thermostat?

  • Check out the type of thermostat you have. There are basically three types of thermostats – mechanical, digital and manual.
  • Manual thermostats have a lever located above it or at the side. Digital thermostats have numbers indicating time and temperatures. Mechanical thermostats have numbers but do not have time shown on it, and are usually round in shape.
  • Using a screwdriver, remove the cover of the thermostat. Some thermostats have a pull up or pop off cover, which can be removed easily as they do not have any screws.
  • Once you open the cover of the thermostat, check the mercury level. Inside, in a glass vial there is mercury that conducts electricity. It is a liquid and this has to be leveled, to level the temperature.
  • To balance the mercury, the side of the vial that has more liquid, needs to be pushed upwards or downwards. This will level the vial. Even if it does not get adjusted after this, the unit will have to be replaced.
  • In case of manual thermostat, the lever has to be pushed downwards or upwards. The lever pushed in upward direction will heat the surroundings, and pushed in downward direction will cool the surroundings.
  • In mechanical or digital thermostats, you can easily program the temperature by the option available for setting these temperatures. You can also set the temperature you want on a specific date, at a specific time, in these thermostats.

Besides these, there are central thermostats as well. This thermostat needs to be adjusted or checked once in a year. This monitoring becomes necessary from the safety point of view, as well as monitoring your bills.

The procedure of adjusting a central thermostat is given below

  • Uncover the thermostat. Detach the front assembly of the thermostat and check the level of the wall plate.
  • If the wall plate is not leveled, unscrew the mounting screws on it and adjust it. Fix the front assembly as it was, and clean it using a brush. All the contact points and switches need to be cleaned.
  • The thermometer reading on the thermostat has to be adjusted according to the room temperature. A bi-metal coil in the thermostat is the thermometer, and you need to adjust its temperature with the help of a screw driver.
  • If the furnace of the thermostat turns on and off frequently, or very rarely, adjust the anticipator. Moving the pointer towards long setting will help control the turning off and on frequently and vice versa.
  • After this remove the clip, body of the thermostat and insulated wire attached to the R and W terminal at the baseplate. If after this, the furnace turns on, the thermostat needs to be replaced. Also, there might be a problem with the transformer, furnace, or the furnace relay. You need to take help of a technician or mechanic for this.

Warning:

While adjusting the thermostat, wear rubber gloves and rubber slippers to avoid any hazards. If you are not good at all this it is advisable to get it done from someone who knows it, or call a mechanic.

Adjusting a thermostat is not a difficult task. However, it is a bit difficult for central thermostats. The manual, digital or mechanical thermostats can be adjusted easily by adjusting the mercury level, or the programming. Try to adjust your thermostat next time if you have any problems with its temperature control.

How to Adjust Photo

Photographs have to be used at different places for different purposes. A photo clicked at a particular place and particular time for some purpose can be used again for some other purpose as well by making some adjustments in it. There are many softwares and also professionals who help you make adjustments to your photograph. However, you too can make some adjustments as per your requirement if you know or learn how to adjust photo.

There are many adjustments that you need to make in a photo. Sometimes you will have to adjust the size, the color, the background and resolution of the page. You can manage to make all these adjustments in your photo by learning some simple techniques to adjust photos. I have jotted down few common adjustments with photographs that you usually need. These tips and procedures will help you adjust your photo yourself.

Adjusting photograph’s resolution:

  • For adjusting the resolution of your digital image, you need the graphic editing program. Right click on the image and select open with graphic editing program, for example Photoshop.
  • Next, click on the image and check the commands given to edit the image. There are many options given
  • Choose the ‘image size’ option given in Photoshop. In other similar programs, the option will be available, and named similarly.
  • Here you can change the resolution of the image. Type the resolution that you want in the blocks given for it. Click ‘Ok’ to set this resolution for this image.
  • You need to save this image with the ‘Save as’ option. This will not hamper your original file. If you hit ‘Save’ directly, it will make changes in the original copy, which you might not want. Hence use the ‘Save as’ option.

In this way, you can adjust the resolution of your picture using any graphic editor.

Adjusting photograph for newsprint:

Formatting an image for newsprint requires you to follow certain specifications. It is very different from formatting photographs for any other print or digital media. News print photographs demand specific formatting so that the photograph looks appropriate in the newspaper. It requires the photograph to be in CMYK profile, and must possess certain set quality, contrast and color specifications. Digital camera pictures can be edited for newsprint, using the ‘digital photo editing software’.

  • Open your image with Photoshop, Corel, Picasa or any such software.
  • As per the photo size you need for your newspaper, you need to resize you photo. Start resizing it by first setting it to 170 DPI.
  • If your image in the paper will appear in 4X3 rectangle, your image should be 680 pixels in width and 510 pixels in length. 680 = 170X4 and 510 = 170 X 3. That is, multiply the dimensions with 170. So if it is 5X6, then your image size will be 5X170 and 6X170.
  • Some agencies need specific DPI, rather than this standard DPI. In that case, you need to multiply the dimension by the DPI, given by the agency.
  • After resizing, adjust the brightness and the contrast of the image. Adjust it till it looks perfect on the screen. The brightness and contrast of the image should be around 20% higher than that of a normal image onscreen.
  • Using the ‘unsharp mask’ of your software, sharpen the photograph. 180% sharpness along with 2 pixel radius and 2 level thresholds is standard, and will be probably best for any newsprint. However, there are exceptions to this as well.
  • Mostly a digital photo is set to RGB that is Red Green Blue. You need to change this to CMYK that is Cyan Magenta Yellow Black. This is a must for any print media. This setting is usually named as ‘color mode’ or ‘color space’ in the menu.

This will help you adjust your photograph for newsprint.

Adjusting photograph for print (hardcopy):

The quality of a photograph or the clarity is known when you get a hardcopy of it. The PPI or DPI of an image determines the quality of an image on printing. You can always adjust this if you need to print any photograph. Read the instruction given below that will help you adjust your photo.

  • Every camera has a set digital resolution for the image. Mostly cameras capture images large in width and height but low on resolution. For example, an image of 42X28 inches will have only 72 ppi (pixels per inch). This setting helps you capture more images.
  • Though such big pictures are clicked, you usually do not get it printed that big. If you print it, the quality will definitely be poor. 72 ppi is apt for screen viewing only.
  • Usually the size opted for print is 8.5X11 inches. You can adjust it by the option ‘Image Size’ under Menu-Image-Image Size. Resizing the actual image to this standard size would increase your pixels to around 300 ppi and give you a better print than the original.
  • Save it using the ’save as’ option to make a duplicate file, rather than overwriting the original file.

These are some basic adjustments you need to make in a photograph. Try it out next time, and make the adjustments yourself.

How to Adjust Disc Brakes

Bike brakes are used very frequently. Being used so frequently, the bike brakes need regular servicing and adjustment. The brakes always have to be perfect to avoid any fatal accident. If your bike brakes do not function properly, it would be very difficult for you to maintain a balance and control on your bike. Now a days there are disc brakes in almost all bikes. These brakes give you a better control using the hydraulic braking mechanism, disc brakes helps you to apply brakes in a fraction of a second without hurting yourself or your bike. The disc brakes require little servicing, which you can do yourself if you know how to adjust disc brakes. Even the mountain bikes have these brakes, and knowing how to adjust disc brakes will help you know how to adjust mountain bike brakes as well.

Equipments required to adjust disc brakes:

  • Goggles or Glare to cover your eyes
  • Hex Head Socket Set
  • Work Gloves
  • Allen Head Socket Set
  • Brake Pads
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Brake Fluid
  • Combination Wrench Set
  • Clean rags
  • 1/4″ clear plastic hose
  • Bucket

How to adjust disc brakes?

  • Before starting any adjustment you need to clean up the calipers of brake. Spray the brake cleaner on these calipers and then wipe this liquid immediately from the caliper using a rag. This will clean up all the oil and dirt, and make the parts more visible.
  • Now check for the mounting bolts, which hold the brake caliper and lower bracket together. Using the appropriate hex head socket or Allen Wrench, you need to break the torque, which is located on a pair of bolts.
  • Unscrew the bolts and get the brake caliper out from the rotor.
  • Next step is to unscrew the bolts that hold the caliper and brake pad together. You need to pull the mounting clips and brake pad out from the caliper.
  • Now on the interior side of the caliper, spray brake cleaner, and wipe it off at that moment. Inside the caliper, there are pistons. Check if there are any damages on it that would not let the piston function properly.
  • When you open the new brake pads, they are not assembled. You need to put the mounting clips on it and assemble it. After assembling, place it on the caliper. The bolts of the caliper should pass through the caliper and mounting clips, and tightened properly.
  • Next step is placing the brake pads in the piston. If you find it difficult to place it on the piston, slide in a screwdriver that will help the piston open completely, and then you can slide the pads in it.
  • Now again place the caliper on the rotor and lower bracket. Place the mounting bolts as they were, and tighten it completely.

This does not complete the brake adjustment. There is one more part to it, and it is working with the brake fluid. Follow the steps given below to rinse out the brake fluid.

  • Pour a little fresh brake fluid in the brake master cylinder. You can clearly see a difference in the fresh and old or contaminated liquid.
  • There is an ‘air bleed valve’ on the caliper. To this valve, attach the plastic tube mentioned above in equipments. One end of the tube should be attached to the valve, and other end should be in a container or bucket.
  • Now you need to maintain a pressure in the brake line by pulling the brake lever. Using wrench open the bleed valve only by half turn. The fluid will start flowing through the tube, and the brake pressure will start reducing.
  • Now close the bleed valve and release the lever. Repeat this procedure until all the contaminated fluid is cleared from the cylinder.
  • Fill the cylinder again with fresh brake fluid now.
  • If any brake fluid has spilled over the plastic hose or below it, clean it immediately.
  • Tap the entire brake line, up to the cylinder, to get rid of any air bubbles in the entire line. This will block the flow of liquid.
  • Fill the master cylinder again if needed, place the cover, and to check the pressure of the brake line, pull and release the lever a couple of times.

Tips:

  • In order to empty the fluid from the cylinder, there are suction pipes or tools available, which are used for this purpose. You can check out if you get one.
  • The old fluid can be recycled at any auto parts outlet. Check for any such outlet in your vicinity, and recycle the fluid.
  • If you are doing all this for the first time, it is advisable to take help from some expert or professional.

Warning:

  • The brake pads should be checked properly. Also, before taking your bike on the road, check the brakes by a small ride in your parking lot or at a place where there is no traffic.

How to Adjust Casio Watch Band

Casio watches are one of the most preferred watches. These are very durable, stylish and many people all over the world prefer to buy these watches. Casio watches have many models and designs for all age groups, classes and different needs. It has digital as well as analog style watches. Casio watches always keeps adding to its range of watches. It adds new features, new designs and keeps upgrading the choices made to customers. They provide all range of designs suiting the needs of all customers; for example, sportswear, business wear, casuals, elegant, etc. however, one problem that the Casio watch owners have is that the belt of their watches is very long. Their watches do not fit properly on their wrists. The buckle strap watches are easier to adjust for the wrist length because only the buckle pin needs to be adjusted to adjust the watch band. Casio watches with metal watch bands are a bit difficult to adjust. However, this does not mean that you cannot wear a Casio watch if the watch belt does not fit on your hand. The watch band can be adjusted with simple tools.

You need some very basic equipment to adjust the watchband of your Casio watch such as:

  • A tool to remove the watch pin
  • Pliers used for jewelry, or pliers used for watch
  • A piece of soft cloth
  • A screwdriver with flat head

How to adjust Casio watch band?

  • Before you start adjusting it, place the watchband on your hand and mark the number of links that you will have to remove to adjust the length of the watch band.
  • To begin with the procedure of adjusting the watch band, you need a flat surface where you can place the watch easily and work with it. Something like a table and you can sit on a chair upright and easily work with it.
  • Now place the soft cloth you have on this table or flat surface. This helps prevent the watch from any scratches or damage while making the adjustments.
  • Place your watch on this soft cloth in such a way that the Casio of the watch is towards the left side and the face of the watch is on the cloth and not towards you.
  • On the left hand side of the watchband there is a clasp. Using the tool to remove the pin of the watch you need to get the pin out, so that the clasp is free. Now place the clasp and pin separately, and work on the watchband.
  • Now there are some watch links that have an arrow printed on the hind side. To adjust the length of your Casio watch band you can remove these links.
  • Between two watch links, there is a ‘retaining clip’. This clip joins the watch links. The small tiny pin on the head of the link is the retaining clip. You will have to remove these pins to detach the links.
  • Hold the watchband tight using your one hand, and with the other hand, you need to pressurize the retaining pin out of the link. The direction that the arrow marks is the direction in which you need to push out the pin. You cannot push out the pins directly; the screwdriver mentioned above will be needed for this.
  • With the screw driver, the pins can be pushed out to a certain extent only. After that, the jewelry pliers mentioned above will be needed to pull the retaining pin out.
  • While removing the links, you have to maintain a balance. This means, do not adjust the length of the watchband only by removing the links from one side of the watch band. From both the sides of the watchband, you will have to remove equal number of links. Continue doing this until you get the desired length of the watchband.
  • Do not throw away these links. Keep it safely because if you have any problem with the watch band in future, you can use these extra links that you had detached. Finding links of similar sizes and designs is difficult and many times impossible.
  • Now the clasp and the link pin that you had removed needs to be replaced as it was before detaching it from the watchband. Push the pin tightly in the link and clasp and check for any loose pins.

Basically, you just need jewelry pliers that will help you detach the extra links owing to which the watchband is lengthy, and does not fit on your wrist. Do not hesitate the watch you like just because the watch band is lengthy. You can adjust it as per the required length and wear the watch you like.

How to Adjust Brightness of Laptop

Many a times, people working continuously in front of their laptops or computers have problems with their eyesight, or continuously complain of headaches. One reason for this might be the brightness setting of the laptop or computer screen. To avoid this problem, you need to know the procedure of how to adjust brightness of a laptop. The brightness can be easily set by using some keys on your laptop. Learn how to adjust the brightness of laptop screen, by reading the instructions given below.

How to adjust brightness of laptop screen?

  • Using the ‘Fn’ key on the laptop, the brightness of the screen can be adjusted. The ‘Fn’ or function key is usually at left hand side corner of your laptop keyboard. In some laptops, it is on the top towards the right hand side.
  • Press the ‘Fn’ key along with the arrow keys on the laptop.
  • If you wish to increase the brightness of the screen, press the function key and the up arrow. To reduce the brightness of the screen, press the function (Fn) key and the downward arrow key together.
  • Besides this, sometimes the screen brightness depends on the battery charge. If the battery is about to exhaust the screen will appear, dull.

The ‘Fn’ and arrow key is used more often, but in some cases, there is another option to adjust the brightness of the screen. In this method, you still use the ‘Fn’ key but along with it, you do not use arrow key, rather you need to use F7 or F8.

‘Fn’ and F7 will increase the brightness of the laptop, whereas ‘Fn’ and F8 will decrease the brightness of your laptop screen.

One more method is to check for the keys on your laptop having pictures of ‘half moon’ or ’sun’. Some laptops provide these keys and this is the easiest way to adjust the brightness of the screen.

For some laptops, the setting varies. For example, Dell laptops have a different procedure of adjusting the brightness of the screen. To adjust the screen brightness of a Dell laptop, you can use the instructions given below.

  • On any empty space on the desktop of your laptop, right click your mouse. On using the right click, you will see a menu.
  • In this menu, choose the option ‘Display Properties’.
  • Under this, you have an option of ‘Color Correction’.
  • Under this, you can see a ‘Brightness scale’. If you move the marker to the right side, the brightness increases. If the marker is moved to the left side, the brightness decreases.
  • After setting the marker on an appropriate place, choose the option ‘Apply’.
  • Then, finalize the settings by clicking ‘OK’. The box will close and the brightness will be adjusted according to your selection.

Toshiba Laptops again have a different way of setting the brightness of the screen.

In case of Toshiba laptops, the brightness of the screen can be adjusted by ‘Fn and F6′ or ‘Fn and F7′ to increase or decrease the brightness respectively.

In this simple manner, you can adjust the brightness of your laptop screen. Besides the standard settings of ‘Fn’ and arrow keys, to know about the system specific settings of your laptop, you can refer to your user’s manual.

Most of us own a pair of binoculars. We use binoculars to watch a match, or while hunting or even while trekking etc. It is used to view the objects, people or routes or structures that are far away, and out of sight for normal eye view. Binoculars use telescopes or refracting lenses, and serves as a magnifying glass. These refracting lenses are placed side by side, so that you can hold it right in front of your eyes. In most of the binoculars there is a prism placed in each tube. These prisms change the direction of the light beam, and present the image upright. However, the binoculars need to be adjusted correctly, so that you can see the right object you are targeting. For these adjustments, you do not need any expert to adjust your binoculars. You yourself can learn how to adjust binoculars and make any adjustments that you need, any time.

You do not need any major instruments to adjust your binoculars. All the adjustments can be done easily without any equipment. You can get the exact view only when your binoculars are adjusted correctly.

The binoculars are adjusted according to your face, so that it comes in line with your eye sight. Here are some adjustments you need to make with your binoculars, so that you project exactly what you want to.

Diopter:

  • There is a dial on your binocular. You need to rotate it to adjust your binocular’s diopter.
  • The dial is usually on the right side or on the knob for center-focus.
  • It is the measurement unit used to measure the lenses magnifying capacity.
  • The diopter setting also helps in compensating for the optical disparity of the eyes, by improving the sharpness.

Facial Settings:

  • The distance or spacing between your eyes and the spacing between the barrels or tubes of the binocular needs to be equal.
  • Place the binocular in front of your eyes, just as you would, to see something.
  • Hold the barrels and move it close or apart, as you need it. Move the barrels till you get to see one single circular view or field. This means that two barrels should not partition your view; it should give you one single view.
  • Before using it, every time you need to adjust the binoculars for facial setting.

Eye Cups:

  • There are these rubber eye-cups on the eye pieces. These eye cups can be adjusted by simply rotating or folding it.
  • The eye cup adjustment provides you with more space or distance over the eyepieces, and is suitable for those who have specs.
  • Rotating the eye cups down will flatten the eye piece.
  • You can then place this flattened eye piece on the spectacle lenses to get a glimpse of what you want to see.

Diopter Setting:

  • To start with, the diopter settings, the diopter ring has to be set at zero.
  • Now, cover the lens on the right side with a cap and try to see what you want to from the left lens with both your eyes.
  • Seeing through the left lens, the focus ring needs to be adjusted till you get a clear and sharp view.
  • Once the left lens is adjusted, cover it with the cap and repeat the same procedure with the right lens.
  • While adjusting the diopter settings you need to keep your eyes relaxed.
  • Once you have adjusted both the lenses, you get a clear sharp view.

  • You can use a magnifying glass to locate the small screw or pin, which is used to joint two such links. (The point marked by the arrow in the above diagram is where the links are joined using small screws or pins)
  • Once you locate this pin or screw, using the small screwdriver, get the pin or screw out of this link. There is a direction marked on the link, which tells you the direction in which the pin or screw will be detached.
  • Remove the pins and screws from the number of links you want to remove. This will depend on your wrist size.
  • The main thing is that the number of links that you remove should be equal on both sides. For example if you need to remove 4 links, remove two from each side. In case you need to remove 3 links, it is better to adjust it with only two links, as you have to remove links in equal numbers from both the sides.
  • Do not remove the links from the end of the watchband. The end of the watchband has the locks attached to it. It would be difficult to attach the lock again if you detach it.
  • Leave the ends aside and start removing the links from the middle of the watchband. After you are done with adjusting, join the remaining links by inserting the screw or pin.
  • Check the links of the band once, for proper fitting of screws or pins.

How to Adjust Floyd Rose

Playing tunes on a Floyd Rose is a wonderful experience; however, you also need to make some adjustments with your Floyd Rose. If you own it, I suggest you should know how to adjust a Floyd Rose. You need not take your guitar to the repair store, every time for some minor adjustments. Knowing how to adjust Floyd Rose is also necessary because, if sometimes while playing in a concert, or in front of a group of people, your Floyd Rose needs some adjustment, you can do it yourself.

Read the instructions given below that will help you adjust your Floyd Rose. You just need an Allen Wrench for adjusting it.

  • There is a nut that joins the headstock and the neck. You need to unscrew this nut. Turning the nut in anticlockwise direction until it loosens completely will help you unlock the nuts.
  • Unlocking the nuts will enable you to adjust the Floyd Rose without getting in contact with the strings. These nuts fasten the strings of the guitar and help you play tunes on your guitar.
  • Next step is loosening the fine tuners. These are located on the tremolo. Turn these in anticlockwise direction till the tuners stop moving. After this, start moving the tuners in clockwise direction just half turn.
  • The tuners help in fine tuning of your guitar. Once you tune the guitar by tightening the nuts and the machine heads, tuners help you tune it further.
  • Now tune the pitch of the guitar by adjusting the headstock tuners. For this, you need to check the face plate. The faceplate and the guitar body should be parallel to each other.
  • If they are not parallel, you will have to adjust it. There is a plastic plate that covers the spring assembly of the Floyd Rose on the hind side, you need to remove it.
  • To relive the string tension, de-tune the strings of the guitar only by half step. Now again check the faceplate’s bridge. This bridge should be tilted backwards. Tighten the screws of the spring.
  • Re-tune the strings that you had de-tuned earlier. Now check the guitar body and face plate for parallelism. If it is still not parallel, follow the next step and if it is fine, skip the next step.
  • On the hind side of the guitar, there are spring screws. They hold the spring tension intact. Loosen it only by a quarter turn. Again, re-tune your guitar. After adjusting the spring tension, you always have to re-tune your guitar. The tuning action changes the faceplate position. Until the faceplate and the guitar body are parallel to each other, repeat this step.
  • After it parallel in position, fix the nuts you had unscrewed. For the final tuning of the guitar, adjust the fine tuner at the hind side.

How to Adjust a Water Pressure Regulator

A water pressure regulator checks the high pressure water flowing from a huge public water supply line to enter your household pipe-line. In case the regulator does not function properly, it will lead to water leakage from pipes, faucets and may also lead to bursting of pipe lines. If the street side water pipeline has an old regulator installed on it, then on your domestic end, you install a new water regulator so that it adjusts the water pressure. Even the local governance body of your vicinity would want the water pressure regulators to be installed at your end, so that there is no damage caused to pipelines or plumbing arrangements at your home. However, you still need to make some adjustments with the water regulator sometimes. Read the following instructions to learn how to adjust a water pressure regulator.

You just need an Allen Wrench and screwdriver for adjusting the water pressure regulator. If there is any leakage, you might need to make some replacements. Check for these before you start working. If you happen to change some valve or pipeline, you cannot rush to get it at the 11th hour. Try to get it and your home will be full with water. Collect all the material and equipment before you begin adjusting the water regulators.

How to adjust water pressure regulator?

  • Before trying to make any major adjustments, try to adjust the water pressure by the screw on the regulator.
  • Turning the screw in clockwise direction will increase the pressure of water in your home.
  • Turning the screw in anti-clockwise direction will decrease the water pressure in your home.

If this does not help, you adjust the water pressure regulator then you need to make further adjustments. The procedure for adjusting the regulator is given below.

  • Firstly, you need to note the reading of your water pressure regulator. For this, attach a water pressure gauge to a faucet on the pipe. The standard reading for the water pressure in domestic households is 40-60 psi (per square inch)
  • If the readings are not within these set standards, then you need to adjust the water pressure.
  • Find out the regulator of water pressure in your household plumbing fittings. On this water regulator, there is brass valve, which has a bell-shaped housing.
  • On the top of this bell, there is a lock nut and a screw, which will help you adjust the regulator.
  • The wrench should be adjusted such that it holds the lock nut properly. With a screwdriver, hold the screw in place. Move the wrench to unscrew the lock nut. Do not loosen the nut completely, just a little.
  • While loosening the lock nut, the adjusting screw needs to be turned by one turn in clockwise direction if the noted reading of water pressure was below 40 psi.
  • If the reading was above 60 psi, then turn the screw by one turn in anticlockwise direction.
  • Now again check the reading on the water pressure gauge. Check if the reading is between 40-60psi. If not, then readjust the pressure by turning the lock nut and screw.
  • Once you get the required reading, hold the screw in position, and fix the lock nut properly.
  • Check for water pressure in all the different connections in your house. Check it twice, thrice and also check the reading on the water gauge.
  • If the reading remains constantly in an acceptable range, then the water pressure regulator is adjusted correctly.

Adjusting the water pressure regulator in a water heater:

Another water pressure regulator which needs to be adjusted is the regulator on the water heater. There is a valve on the water pressure regulator, which as gets old starts leaking and indicates that it needs to be replaced or repaired. However, the valve may not function correctly, if the water pressure is not proper. You need to adjust this valve, which serves as the water pressure regulator in a water heater.  Given below is the procedure for adjusting the water pressure in a water heater.

  • Before making any changes or adjustments with your water heater, first switch of the electric current to it.
  • Turn off the cold water supply to your water heater.
  • Using an Allen wrench relieve the valve completely and detach it.
  • Now the new valve’s thread needs to be wrapped in the plumber’s tape, and screw the valve to the water heater again. Using a wrench, tighten the valve completely.
  • Now turn the cold water and power on. The pressure of the water will be back to normal now.
