What the Ferber Methods says:

The Ferber method basically emphasizes on putting the baby to sleep on his/her own without the presence of the parents around. This method does take time for the baby to adjust as the baby is not used to staying away from the mother for long. This process needs to be followed in a certain format. This is usually a 7 day program but can also be extended to 14 days in order to give a steady approach to the process.

You need to leave the baby in the cradle or the bed to sleep on his own. Yes, your baby will start crying once you exit the room. Let the baby cry for 5 minutes, then come back and console the baby, but avoid staying in the room for long even if the baby is still crying; and avoid picking the baby or rocking him. Try and increase the time you wait before you enter to console the child. For example, the first time you wait for 5 minutes; the second time for 10 minutes and the third time, 15 minutes; and set a maximum period you would wait before you enter the child’s room.

After a routine has been set, enter the room briefly and allow the child to cry, as he will fall asleep himself after crying for some time. This does not mean that you let the child cry until he sleeps, your brief presence in the room is necessary. The Ferber method has emphasized on the avoidance of the baby’s frequent crying. The ‘progressive waiting technique’ pushes the parents to comfort the child frequently. Although the method teaches to put a baby to sleep on his own, it does not mean that a child, who co-sleeps, develops into a person with a lesser sense of individuality.

The Ferber method has always been controversial, as not all parents believe that leaving a child to cry for even a few minutes is fine. Although the Ferber method is a very useful method and has helped a lot of parents to provide a sound sleep to their children, the method that works best is the best method that should be used.

The book, ‘Solve Your Childs Sleep Problems’, which was written by Dr Richard Ferber, has an upgraded version which was released in the year 2006. The upgraded version also includes information about the requisites for a child’s sound sleep and has incorporates all the scientific and technological evolution that took place in that area, in the 20 years after the release of the first version.

  • Hold the thread and get it through the points wherein the thread needs to pass. This point is on the machine’s top. Then take this thread down to the tension assembly of the machine, which is to the left of the machine. This controls the thread’s flow.
  • Direct the thread below the tension assembly, then up to the next threading point, which is located on the left side top of the sewing machine. It is necessary that the thread needs to pass between 2 tension discs and the hook attached to the left of the tension dial.
  • Put the thread inside the lever which is placed at the left top of the machine and then down in the left side bottom thread points in the machine over the needle.
  • The direction from which the needle of the machine will be threaded depends and varies on the type of machine that you are using.
  • Pull the thread towards your left from the needle’s eye.
  • A wound bobbin needs to be inserted into the sewing machine and then shut off the throat plate. Some part of the thread must be sticking out of the throat plate, which is closed.
  • After this, you need to rotate the machine’s hand-wheel so that the needle vanishes to the bobbin case
  • Rotate the hand-wheel a little to bring the needle at the peak point. When this is done a ring of bobbin pops up along with it.
  • When you draw the thread to the left of you, the ring of the bobbin thread further pops up.
  • Pull up the bobbin thread and when the end of the thread comes up, draw the upper and lower threads with the help of pressure foot.

In this way, by knowing how to thread a sewing machine, you need not wait for the technician to help you thread the machine. You can do it yourself and start sewing.

How to Become a Pilot in the RAF

Becoming a pilot in the RAF is the coveted dream of many young aspirants. It is a career full of risks, dangers and thrills and therefore there are many who are drawn to this life of excitement and adventure. Eligibility:

Every candidate desirous of applying to become a pilot in the RAF should fulfil the following criteria

  • Be between 17.5 and 25 years
  • Be a citizen of UK or Ireland or could hold dual UK citizenship
  • Score 5 grade C or above in GCSE
  • Score grades A-C in any two A levels

How to Apply

  1. You can obtain the necessary forms from the nearest Armed Forces Career Office after which you can begin the application process. You also have the facility to apply online at raf.mod.uk. Your application will then be processed following which you will undergo the AST(Airman/Airwoman Selection Test which assesses your mechanical aptitude, memory, verbal reasoning, mathematics, spatial reasoning and electrical comprehension.
  2. Next you will need to take the physical fitness tests. This includes an occupational health assessment which consists of vision and hearing tests and an evaluation of your entire health history. There is also a pre joining fitness test at a AFCO (Armed Forces Career Office) where your physical strength and endurance will be tested.   1. OCS: Officer Candidate School: If you have just graduated or are about to, you could opt for this 12 week intensive training course. Apply for OCS only if you are sure about your aim of becoming a fighter pilot in the navy
  2. U.S Naval Academy: This is suitable to those who want a taste of a tough, disciplined and intense military type experience while in college. The competition is tight but if you get through, you will be paid to attend
  3. ROTC: This will be less rigorous than the Naval Academy but here you will not know what exactly you will be doing in the navy until you clear your senior year. Join here only if you can afford to be flexible with your aim

Flight School

If you decide to get your commission in the navy through the OCS, you will begin flight school after 12 weeks. However if you attend the Naval Academy or the ROTC, then you would need to graduate before being able to progress to flight school.

  • API – Aviation Pre flight Indoctrination: This is a six week course focussing on the theoretical aspects of aviation and culminates with land and water survival training. There will not be any flying lessons at this stage but the valuable lessons you learn here will hold you in good stead throughout your aviation career
  • Basic Flight training: This course lasts for 9 months and is the rough equivalent of a private pilot license. Here your aptitude for flying will be thoroughly tested and your performance will determine the kind of aircraft you will get to fly. Only the top ten percent of the class will be granted their choice of aircraft. This is the most important step of your training. There are 3 kinds of aircraft that you could be assigned, helicopters, jets or transportation aircraft.
  • Advanced Jet flight school: If you reach this level successfully you are already among the top elite as you have performed better than most of your classmates at flight school. Now you will be taught the fundamentals of fighter aviation and also about how to land on an aircraft carrier.
