How to use Ferber Method

Putting your baby to sleep could sometimes be a tedious affair. There are numerous methods to put your baby to sleep. The Ferber method is one such method, which has been successfully followed around the world. Knowing how to use the Ferber method to put your baby to sleep can be useful in order to see your young one sleep peacefully.

The Ferber method got its name from pediatrician Richard Ferber, whose book, ‘Solve Your Childs Sleep Problems’, written in 1985, became popular worldwide. Dr. Richard Ferber is known as a stalwart in helping resolve the problems that affect your child’s sleep.

What the Ferber Methods says:

The Ferber method basically emphasizes on putting the baby to sleep on his/her own without the presence of the parents around. This method does take time for the baby to adjust as the baby is not used to staying away from the mother for long. This process needs to be followed in a certain format. This is usually a 7 day program but can also be extended to 14 days in order to give a steady approach to the process.

You need to leave the baby in the cradle or the bed to sleep on his own. Yes, your baby will start crying once you exit the room. Let the baby cry for 5 minutes, then come back and console the baby, but avoid staying in the room for long even if the baby is still crying; and avoid picking the baby or rocking him. Try and increase the time you wait before you enter to console the child. For example, the first time you wait for 5 minutes; the second time for 10 minutes and the third time, 15 minutes; and set a maximum period you would wait before you enter the child’s room.

After a routine has been set, enter the room briefly and allow the child to cry, as he will fall asleep himself after crying for some time. This does not mean that you let the child cry until he sleeps, your brief presence in the room is necessary. The Ferber method has emphasized on the avoidance of the baby’s frequent crying. The ‘progressive waiting technique’ pushes the parents to comfort the child frequently. Although the method teaches to put a baby to sleep on his own, it does not mean that a child, who co-sleeps, develops into a person with a lesser sense of individuality.

The Ferber method has always been controversial, as not all parents believe that leaving a child to cry for even a few minutes is fine. Although the Ferber method is a very useful method and has helped a lot of parents to provide a sound sleep to their children, the method that works best is the best method that should be used.

The book, ‘Solve Your Childs Sleep Problems’, which was written by Dr Richard Ferber, has an upgraded version which was released in the year 2006. The upgraded version also includes information about the requisites for a child’s sound sleep and has incorporates all the scientific and technological evolution that took place in that area, in the 20 years after the release of the first version.

How to Throw a Football Further

Have you always wished to throw the football the farthest while playing a game of football on the ground? If you are playing in the position of a quarterback in your team throwing the ball becomes an important requisite for you as the game majorly depends on you. You are the center of attraction as the quarterback plays a vital role in helping a team win a game. If you learn how to throw a football further, this will give you an edge above the other players. Certain exercises and some techniques of throwing the ball will help you throw the ball further than others.

The following steps can be tried out if you want to throw the football further.

  • To gain the momentum and the strength, you need to practice throwing the ball every day. As a quarterback it becomes necessary that you throw the ball well and further than the others. As your practice gains aggression, each throw should get better than the previous one.
  • Strength to the upper body and the arms are necessary to help you throw the ball farther. This strength can be gained by doing push-ups and other exercises to strengthen these parts.
  • The team for which you play also plays an important role. A quarterback relies on the offensive line of his team to hold the defensive players. You need to wait until the receivers of your team run down towards the opposition area and are open; only then you should throw the ball. The accuracy of the throw matters a lot.
  • Quarterback scramble is a tactic which is very useful. As a quarterback you need to avoid tackles from the defense while waiting to throw the long ball. While doing so a you need to be behind the dispute line.
  • Only having the strength to throw the ball further won’t do, as while throwing the ball deep, you need to create and angle and throw the ball with an arc as such that the ball goes high and lands into the receiver’s hands you intended.
  • Use of the waist and the your legs to give that thrust while throwing, will give that extra force to the ball sending it farther. Drive your back leg in order along with thumping your hips, when you release the ball from your hand. The use of lower body helps you get the momentum to throw the ball far.
  • Practice to get a perfect spiral throw which helps give more force than a weak and wobbly throw.
  • Make sure that the ball is properly inflated as a ball with less air won’t give you the distance, even if you follow the above tactics. Avoid strength imbalance by training both the arms equally.

It is not an easy task to just get on to the field and throw the ball the furthest. It definitely requires an strict exercise schedule for the upper body and the arms specially. Proper practice and physical training along with certain techniques will help you get that perfect throw and being a quarterback, this becomes a very important requisite in the game of football.

  • Sewing machine
  • Sewing bobbins
  • Needles used in a sewing machine

The following steps can be followed to thread a sewing machine:

  • Turn the handwheel on the machine towards you and raise the needle high enough.
  • By raising the pressure foot, you can easily pass the thread through the threading point. This prevents the needle from getting unthreaded frequently.
  • Keep the thread spool in the spool pin. Some machines have a horizontal spool holder, if this is the case make sure that the thread spool is covered with the cap.
  • Hold the thread and get it through the points wherein the thread needs to pass. This point is on the machine’s top. Then take this thread down to the tension assembly of the machine, which is to the left of the machine. This controls the thread’s flow.
  • Direct the thread below the tension assembly, then up to the next threading point, which is located on the left side top of the sewing machine. It is necessary that the thread needs to pass between 2 tension discs and the hook attached to the left of the tension dial.
  • Put the thread inside the lever which is placed at the left top of the machine and then down in the left side bottom thread points in the machine over the needle.
  • The direction from which the needle of the machine will be threaded depends and varies on the type of machine that you are using.
  • Pull the thread towards your left from the needle’s eye.
  • A wound bobbin needs to be inserted into the sewing machine and then shut off the throat plate. Some part of the thread must be sticking out of the throat plate, which is closed.
  • After this, you need to rotate the machine’s hand-wheel so that the needle vanishes to the bobbin case
  • Rotate the hand-wheel a little to bring the needle at the peak point. When this is done a ring of bobbin pops up along with it.
  • When you draw the thread to the left of you, the ring of the bobbin thread further pops up.
  • Pull up the bobbin thread and when the end of the thread comes up, draw the upper and lower threads with the help of pressure foot.

In this way, by knowing how to thread a sewing machine, you need not wait for the technician to help you thread the machine. You can do it yourself and start sewing.

You need to zero in on a flight school and you could judge using parameters like type, age and number of aircraft that the school owns. This would determine the frequency of flying lessons you would be able to avail.

You would also need to buy study materials and FAA handbooks which can either be downloaded from the FAA website or bought from a bookstore. Other essential equipment could include headsets to help reduce noise interference from the sound of the engine. You should also consider buying an E6B which is a flight computer that would come in handy for a variety of purposes.A

Flight School

  1. All training begins with an introductory flight where you will be able to assess your own aptitude for flying. The cost of this lesson is usually half of that of a regular flying session.
  2. A medical certificate from a Certified Aviation Medical Examiner can be obtained on passing a thorough medical exam. Vision, physical dexterity and mental alertness are the main aspects stressed upon. Clearing the medicals is not difficult if you are reasonably healthy and fit

  5. The trainee pilot will undergo a written examination after achieving 40 hours of flight time. This exam tests the candidate’s knowledge about flight dynamics, basic aircraft operating procedures, navigation and meteorology. If you have been studying regularly from the beginning of the course, the test shouldn’t be a difficult hurdle to cross.
  6. Once you get past the written exam successfully, you will have to clear the practical flight test. If you pass this test, you will be awarded the private pilot’s license which allows you to fly single engine aircraft for pleasure and recreation. You are not yet ready to handle jets and multi engine aircraft for which you will need more flying experience and additional ratings.
  7. The entire training till you earn your Private Pilot’s license costs between $8000 & $12000. The number of hours you need to complete the course will also determine your expenditure.

How to Become a Pilot Car Driver

You may have often encountered a small car with flashing lights driving ahead of a huge truck carrying an exceptionally wide load. This small car is called a pilot car and its main role is to alert the traffic that a heavy truck is heading that way and to make room for it to pass. The drivers of these cars are professional pilot car drivers and they need to be skilled at driving and navigation.

What do you need to become a pilot car driver?

No degrees or diplomas are required for the job of a pilot car driver. All you need is a driving license and some states may also require you to have additional documentation as proof that you are familiar with the rules of the profession. The main requisite is that you should be absolutely comfortable driving the pilot car and be able to manoeuvre and control it with effective ease.

However, all said and done, the job of pilot car drivers is quite different from that of regular drivers as they need to know how to direct and control traffic. Therefore you would need some training before getting into the field. The best way to go about training is to work under an experienced pilot car driver for a month or two, ride along with him and get to know the nuances of the job. You will then figure out that wider loads are more difficult to navigate and need a higher level of skill and expertise in order to ensure safety.

What is the kind of equipment required?

The most basic of among all that you need to carry is a map and a GPS to help you chalk out well in advance, the path you are going to take. The car that you are driving should be in good condition so that it remains trouble free even on long driving stretches. The other equipment that you need to include is a fire extinguisher, flags and signs and a CB. You would also need to check with the regulations of the particular state you would be driving in as the equipment requirements are state specific.

How well paying is the job of a pilot car driver?

Pilot car drivers are usually self employed and have their own companies. They work on a contractual basis with the truck companies and charge according to distance travelled. The current rates are approximately $200 for the initial 100-150 miles and then $1.50 for every subsequent mile. On an average, a pilot car driver would earn $ 30000-35000/year.

You could also double up as a truck driver in the phases when pilot car contracts coming your way are fewer than usual. This would enable you to have a steadier source of income.

What you should be prepared for

Like any other profession, this one also has its flip side. It is better to know what to expect and make an informed career choice rather than being caught unawares later. The following are some points you need to weigh and decide if they suit your temperament.

  • Driving long hours: The lifestyle of a pilot car driver is quite similar to that of a truck driver and entails long hours of driving for days on end. As your earnings are directly proportional to the distance driven, you need to be able to cover several miles per day.
  • Additional Expenses incurred: Pilot car drivers would need to halt for the night in a motel or sleep in the car but this might not be a comfortable option. The daily motel stays would surely eat into your overall earnings and hence reduce your profit margins.
  • Hazardous profession: It is certainly not an easy task to navigate and make way for a huge extra wide truck. There would be times when you need to display aggression to be able to direct the traffic to do as you bid. You would need high levels of alertness and control when you need to change lanes or reposition the truck and even a momentary lase of concentration could prove dangerous.

Now that you know how to become a pilot car driver and what it takes to become one, you can make an informed career choice. A love for driving and an inclination to live an unconventional lifestyle are the decisive traits that would prompt you to take on this challenging career.
