For understanding the process, it is better to know how kidney stones are caused, why they create so much pain and how you can treat them.

Kidney Stones
- Kidney stones are nothing but hard masses of crystals that are formed with minerals, which are found in the urine. However, most of the times the chemicals present in the urine will prevent the formation of the crystals. Sometimes, due to reasons like infection, diet problems and disorder is the metabolic activities the chemicals will not function properly.
- Once you are done with passing the kidney stones, your doctor will examine those stones and will let you know the kind of those stones. This will allow the doctor to come up with a treatment plan for you. For instance, the doctor, depending on the kind of stone, will ask you to limit certain things in food or he will test you for metabolic issues.
Kidney Stones and Urinary System
- As per the name, a kidney stone will originate from your kidney. It will start traveling from the renal pelvis, which is a funnel like opening present between the ureter and kidney. Ureter is a slim tube, which leads from each kidney and moves towards the bladder.
- The kidney stone will start traveling from the ureter inside the bladder, then it will move out in the urethra, with the flow of urine. At this point, the kidney stone can get stuck, which will lead to swelling and even damage to some parts in the urinary system. The longer the stone is stuck, the more damage it will cause.
Size
- Kidney stones can be small moving from the kidneys, ureter, bladder and then the urethra. Sometimes the kidney stones can be the size of a golf ball where you will need to undergo a surgery to eliminate them.
- If the kidney stone is larger than two-three mm in diameter, then it will automatically start stretching the walls of renal pelvis and ureter. These muscles will automatically start spasm, because they are trying to push out the kidney stones. This is the reason why you will suffer pain in your stomach, flank and back.
- Once the stone has passed from the ureter, the pain will start reducing. Anywhere from hours, weeks to months the kidney stones will pass out from your body. Usually, the stones will need only one to three weeks for passing out. Most of these stones will pass out on their own with little pain.
- If the stone does not pass out within a month, it might be stuck, and will lead to infection if not taken out in time. If you undergo a CAT scan or an ultrasound and if the stone is 6mm or bigger then the doctor will have to remove it with surgery.
Medical Intervention
- If there are large stones, then doctors can break those stones with shock wave treatments and then you will be able to pass the fragments of those stones. Sometimes they will insert a stent from the ureter opening, which will allow the stones to pass out quickly. Also, if the stone still does not come out then you will have to go for a keyhole surgery or some kind of conventional surgery with abdominal incision, depending on the position of the stone.
Home Treatment
- If the doctor has asked to allow the stone to pass on its own, then there are several things that you can do for making yourself comfortable. Try taking ibuprofen, but make sure that you ask your doctor the number of time and the dose of the medicines that you will have to take.
- For easing the pain, you can sit in a warm bath with heating pad pressed against your flank. Keep drinking lot of water, the doctors will recommend you to have at least 12 glasses of water a day if you are suffering from kidney stones.
- Whenever you are urinating, make sure that you do it inside the device, which is provided by the doctor. You will have to catch the stones when they are passing out, so that you can give it to your doctor for examination.
Wait for a month to pass out the kidney stones; if it takes any longer, you must visit your doctor.
