Singing is the act of making musical sounds with your voice, and augmenting regular speech by using rhythm and tonality. A person who sings is known as a vocalist or singer. Singers perform the songs, which can be a cappella without any accompaniment or with instruments and musicians. The instruments can range from one instrumentalist or to a full band. Singing is usually done in a group of musicians, like choir of singers who have a different voice range or along with instrumentalists in their ensemble, like rock group or with a baroque ensemble. Learning how to be a better singer is very simple.
Anyone who can speak can sing easily because singing is sustained speech. Sometimes singing can be informal and can be performed for pleasure, like karaoke and singing in the shower. Singing can be formal as well, like singing in the rituals such as mass or professional singing in the recording studios. Singing, which is done at a high amateur or at professional levels, will always require instructions and regular practice. All the professional singers will make their career around a specific musical genre, like rock or classical. These singers undergo voice training, which is given by a vocal coach or voice teacher in their career.
Learning to be a better singer in very simple, here are some simple steps to be a better singer.
- First, you must know how to sing, because this will be the main foundation of your singing career. You must keep improving your performance and improve the way you sing.
- You can study the singers that you admire a lot. Try to figure out; how they sing? How did they become professional singers? What kind of genre do they cater to? And what is their signature style?
- Start taking voice lessons. You will have to hire a voice coach who can train your voice and if you keep practicing, then you will notice an improvement in your vocal quality soon. Voice training is very important in strengthening the overall quality of your voice. However, you must always remember that if you do not practice in the right manner then you will end up damaging your voice.
- You must learn proper breathing technique while singing. For a singer the best way to breathe is through the diaphragm and not the chest. If you do this, then you can fill your lungs with more air. This will allow you to sustain notes for a longer time and will give you enough time for warming up the vocals. Always keep in mind that breathing should be steady and slow and you should practice this even when you are not singing. For a singer, the breathing should be always constant.
- After this, you will have to work on how the air is expelled from the lungs through the folds of your vocal cord. The first exercise for practicing this will be ‘lip rolls’. In this, the lips are placed over one another and the air is expelled slowly, like a baby trying to say ‘raspberry’.
- You can use the lip rolls exercise for applying it to the musical scale. The air will be expelled out while ‘humming’ the note on your scale, slowly moving upwards on the scale and then back down.
- After this, you can practice a ‘shhhh’ exercise. When you do this exercise you breath deeply from your diaphragm, and then expel the air in a harsh form of ‘shhhh’ and allow the air to move out.
- These exercises will help you in improving your vocal range, but it is also like a warm up so that you have very little stress on the vocal cord. It will allow you to sing easily across the registers.
- You must try to make your own style. Start experimenting with different ways of singing and different kinds of music, determine, which one fits your personality, and make your voice sound good. You must make such an impact on people that they are able to recognize you by your voice.
Tips and Warnings:
- If you are not able to perform, the ‘lip roll’ and you keep stopping, you can take the index fingers of both your hands and place them inside the cheek hollows. After this blow gently when the lips are pressed together, this will help a lot.
- Trust and believe in yourself and never assume that you know everything. It will take time to develop your voice and sound and even more time to convince people that you are great. Always make sure that you are confident, because people can easily notice your nervousness.
