How to be a Good Parent

A parent is the caretaker of the child and taking care of the child is known as parenting. Parenting is raising the child and educating him or her in the best possible way. The aim of parents is to create socially responsible individuals who can make their parents proud one day. Learning how to be a good parent is not difficult; it is something that is bound to come naturally to you.

The main duty of the parent is to provide the child with social security and physical security. The mother and father share the responsibility of raising a well-mannered individual. They should make their child confident enough to face the world. Here are some simple steps you can follow if you want to be a good parent.

Express love and affection

  • A little encouragement, cuddle, approval or appreciation can run a long way for boosting your child’s confidence. Try to let your children know that you love them. Love them unconditionally and keep in mind that you must not force them to become someone they are not. Just let them know that you will keep loving them no matter what they do.

Listen to them

  • Always express interest in your child and make sure that you involve yourself in his or her life. Make an atmosphere, in which they can come to you with their problems small or big.

Help them feel safe

  • Give your children their own space and always respect that privacy. Ensure them that once you enter their room you will not check their drawers or read their personal diaries.
  • Never argue with your spouse in front of the children. If you are having problems with your spouse then sit down quietly and discuss the problems. The child will get insecure if you continue to fight everyday.
  • Never show favoritism between two children. If your children are quarreling then do not pick anyone’s side; the other kid will feel left out.

Provide orders

  • Set some ground rules like bed times and curfews, so that they know you have limitations. If you do this, they will get a feeling that you care about them. Start encouraging their responsibilities by giving them some jobs to do and when they do that job reward them.
  • Teach them what is wrong and right. If you are religious take them to your place of worship such as a temple, church or mosque. Never do all the things routinely for the children, allow them to work on their own. When it comes to consuming alcohol then ask them to wait till the right age and then they can start with moderation.

Praise your siblings

  • Always remember that you must never compare your children to other children, especially siblings. Every child is unique and you must celebrate their different interests and ask them to pursue their dreams.
  • Teach your child that it is okay to be different and they must never follow the crowd. Keep in mind that your child is an extension of yourself, so care for them and ask them to be different and pursue their dreams.

Avoid criticism

  • Whenever your child acts in a bad or harmful manner, just tell your child that is not the correct way to behave and suggest them some positive alternatives. Always be kind and assertive when you are pointing out their mistakes. Be stern and not rude when you tell them about the kind of behavior you expect from them.
  • If they happen to misbehave in public, do not shout on them in front of everyone. Instead, take them aside and tell them privately that this behavior will not be tolerated. Model good behavior and character in your child, so that they will behave in a proper manner.

Be consistent

  • Enforce rules that will lead to living a happy life and not the ones that will make their life miserable. Always try to control you temper and communicate clearly with the children. A child should be familiar with the consequences of their actions. If you are punishing them, they should know the reason behind it. If you do not let them know then they will keep repeating the mistake.

Be role model

  • Small kids are like clay, they will mold the way you want them to. Teach kids that they must help you from time to time in daily chores. Let them know that sharing is a good thing, and they should share their things with the siblings.

Let them experience life

  • Always keep in mind that you must not always make decisions for them. They should learn to live life by the consequences of their own actions. They will have to learn that their every action will have a consequence. Do not jump in for help unless something major has happened and they really need your help.
  • Spend as much time as you can with them, but do not be overprotective or they may feel that you are imprisoning them.

Tips and Warnings:

  • Never be afraid to be a parent. Put in your best effort and be their parent, but never let them forget that you are the parent. Parenting will not stop the child to grow up. However, once they are adults they will be responsible for all the actions they take in their life.
  • Never beat or hurt your child. It will cause nothing else but resentment and they will want to go against you.
