How to be a Hacker

A hacker is an expert in computer programming, who can create complex hardware and software. These hackers are the masters in the field of computing and they have gained a certain kind of status for themselves in the field. However, there are two different meanings of a computer hacker. The first refers to a person who has immense knowledge about the computers, and the other will break inside the computer security and get useful data hacked. Learning how to be a hacker can be a little tough, but you can keep practicing.

A hacker who gets inside the computer security system for stealing data is not considered as a computer expert. However, in the computer world a hacker is considered as a computer expert or a security expert. Hackers can be skilled in software programming and hardware modifying. If you want to become a hacker, follow these simple steps:

  • First, you will have to adopt the mindset of a hacker. Hackers are known for solving the problems and building things, and they will always believe in freedom and voluntary mutual help. If you want to be accepted as a hacker, then you will have to behave like you have an attitude of your own and you believe in it. Therefore, if you want to be a hacker then follow the following points.
    • The world is filled with fascinating things that are waiting to be solved. You will have to get some basic thrill by solving problems, exercising your intelligence and sharpening your skills.
    • Fit this in mind, that no problem should be solved twice. The thinking time of the hacker is precious and they will not repeat their work. If you want to behave like a hacker then you will have to remove the boring bits as soon as possible.
    • Freedom is the best. You will always have to fight the authoritarian attitude, which you will find everywhere. Another thing that you will have to learn is attitude is not a substitute for competence. Hackers will never let the posers waste time, but they will always worship competence, especially in hacking. However, competence is a difficult skill and you will need some time to master that skill.
  • Now you will have to learn how to program. The best way of learning this is by reading the stuff written by the masters of the form; try writing some things yourself. For being a real hacker, you will have to keep learning new computing languages everyday.
  • Initially, start learning python, it is a language that has been designed cleanly, is properly documented and best suited for beginners. In spite of being the first language, do not consider it very simple; it is a flexible and very powerful program used for large projects.  If you want to get into serious programming, then you will have to learn C, and the core language of Unix ix C++, which is closely related to C.
  • For practical reasons, you will have to learn Perl. It is one of the widest used languages for active web pages and system administration. You must also know how to write it. LISP is another language that is worth learning; though it is not used a lot, it will surely make you a programmer.
  • After this, try to get one of the open-source unixes and learn running the program. Unix is an operating system, and you can never be a successful hacker without learning how to understand unix.
  • You will have to learn how to use the World Wide Web and writing HTML. Except for learning how to drive a browser, you will have to learn how you can write it in HTML, which is the markup language of the web. If you have no idea on how to program, then writing HTML will teach you some different mental habits, which will help in learning. Therefore, try building a homepage and always stick to XHTML, because it is a cleaner language as compared to HTML.
  • If you do not know functional English, then you will have to learn it. English is known as the working language in the hacker internet and hacker culture, and you will have to learn it in order to function in hacker community.
  • The last thing will be to earn respect as a hacker. Depending on your ability to solve problems, how interesting they are and if the solutions are really good, you will be judged on your hacking qualities. You will not be a successful hacker until people keep calling you to solve their problems.
  • There are many ways to become successful, like writing open-source software. Try writing programs that according to other hackers are useful or fun, and pass on the program sources to everyone in the hacker community. In the hackerdom, demigods are the ones who have written capable and large programs, which are widespread and everyone is using them.
  • Next thing you can do is help in testing and debugging open-source software and help in keeping the infrastructure working.

Tips and Warnings:

  • Never be content in few skills. There will be many hackers as self-described programmers, but they will be more competent in several other skills. Always remember that hackers never do anything in half, if they do something then they master that skill.
  • According to a famous myth, you do not have to be a nerd to be a hacker. However, most of the hackers are nerds but you can be an exception. For being a hacker, you just need the mindset of the hacker.
  • Always keep in mind that never use stupid grandiose user IDs or screen name. Never get into flame wars that are on Usenet. Also, never call yourself a ‘cyberpunk’ and never entertain anyone who calls themselves that.
