Being a dog trainer is a pretty rare profession. But the demand for dog trainers has been continually growing and will grow as long as there are pet lovers in this world. If you love dogs and spending time with them then this is an ideal career choice for you. Here is a basic guide to get you started on being a successful dog trainer.
- Making the choice: Although it obvious, the first thing you need to be a dog trainer is a love for dogs and an ability to get along well with them. If you start out on a dog training business but secretly find dogs dirty and depressing then this job is not the right one for you. Remember once you are a trainer you cannot afford to be selective about your clients. If you find small Poodles cute but are terrified by the idea of dealing with an Alsatian its time to rethink your career choice. The bottom line being to be in this profession you have to have a love for dogs and the ability to spend long hours working with them every single day. If you have no love for dogs, it doesn’t how much training you undergo, you will still be a terrible trainer.
- The basics: Even if you love working with dogs you will have to understand them, both mentally and physically to be successful. This means having a basic understanding of veterinary medicine, an ability to understand their body language, the psychology of female and male dogs, their social tendencies while alone or in a pack , the feeding habits etc. Once you are familiar with these basics you will also need to understand and learn training techniques etc. This means you have to be the kind of person who likes to learn and read a lot, especially about dogs. If this is too much trouble for you once again, rethink your career choice.
- Certifications and qualification: To be taken seriously in this world you will need to have some sort of qualification in dog training. There are courses on the internet that you can take up. Search around and look for one that is recognized nationally and pretty well known. Remember your clients will be not really impressed by certificates on your wall received by a company from the internet nobody has ever heard about. You can also find part time college or school courses which are state certified. Completing these courses successfully will give you a diploma with good value. Look up www.ccpdt.org (Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers) for associate and recognized certification.
- Apprenticeships: Starting a dog training business as soon as you get a qualification with no hands on experience is not such a smart move. Most owners will be reluctant to hand over their loved animals to an unknown newbie. As a newbie you will have to make a choice, you can either try and set up your own business which will involve a lot of hard word and dedication or you can start working for a well established animal training organization. This will enable you to get some work experience and will also help you build up a reputation.
- Communication skills: The last thing you should remember is that your job involves dealing with a lot of people. If people don’t trust you they will never hand over their animals to you. Hence you must be diplomatic and generally nice to people if you don’t want to be out of work.
