A person who specializes in some or many areas of the business of maintaining, fabricating, assembling and disassembling, repairing, engraving, cleaning, selling or customizing firearms is a gunsmith. To pursue a career as a gunsmith you will have to possess the skills of a metal worker, a wood worker, a mechanic, and an artisan. You will also have to have a good knowledge of maths, chemistry and ballistics and will have to be able to work precisely and accurately. For self employed gunsmiths a good knowledge of operating a small business, ability to deal with a great variety and diversity of customers and a wide knowledge of local, state and federal laws is important. The educational qualifications required to be a gunsmith vary a lot. A good gunsmith has to be skilled in handling machines, good with metallurgy, ballistics and woodworking. Most gunsmiths will possess a background in working with metals, although just being able to do this does not mean you will make a great gunsmith. If you are sure you want to be a gunsmith you will need to understand what gunsmiths need to know.
- The first step to being successful as a gunsmith is getting a formal education from a good gunsmith college or school. Most trade schools and community colleges will offer associate’s degrees to be a gunsmith. The National Rifle Association, for example, offers courses on gunsmith.
- There is no substitute for on-job, hands on training. Not only will you require a formal education, you must complete apprenticeship along with an experienced gunsmith. This is necessary yo get all the practical experience to be a successful gunsmith. Most apprentices work for at least 8,00 hours on the job before they move on to do their own thing.
- Learn how to work with tools. It is absolutely necessary to be comfortable while using tools such as a drill press, gauges, a reamer, lathe, milling machines etc. Take a course in machine shop and develop your skills enough to be comfortable while working with such hand tools.
- Read and understand local, state and federal laws related to your area regarding gunsmiths. If your plan is to either sell or build firearms, possession of an FFL or the Federal Firearms License is a must. Additionally different counties, states, cities, townships etc will have their laws and rules refarding being a gunsmith. Always make sure you are aware of the laws related to you.
- Do a part time gunsmiths job. When wanting to be a gunsmith its a good idea to not quit your day job and to start off part time. You will need this time to be able to set up a customer base, build up some money for investing and to be able to buy the tools you will require. In fact most professional gunsmiths will recommend you to start off as a part timer.
- Work with a gunsmith , a gun maker, the government armorer, a custom gun maker, or for the police as an armorer. This will give you a good base to gain some business experience, money to buy the tools you need and contacts for when you will need customers.
Other than this, you might want to take a course in business to be able to run a successful business. Sometimes insurance and licenses might be hard to get, or you might not want to deal with accounting, billing and bookkeeping and hence might consider working for someone else as this will let you do only the things you love instead of having to deal with the intricacy of running a business. There are many steps involved to become a gunsmith but if this is your calling in life then there is no other satisfaction like actually becoming a gunsmith.
