A mail carrier is also known as post carrier, mail carrier, postman, mailman or a letter carrier. A mailman is an worker of the post office or of the postal service. His job is to deliver the mails or parcel posts to residences and companies. The term mailman was replaced with the term Mail Carrier, when women started to work in this industry. The official name change to postman happened in 1883.
There are three types of mail carriers such as
- City Carriers: these mail carriers are hired as a part of time flexible carriers, including benefits. They have three city ways and a full time job.
- Rural Carriers: They are hired under the Rural Carrier Association, no included benefits. There is at least one rural carrier appointed at every route, they work hours are short as compared to City Carriers.
- Highway Contract Route Carriers: These mail carriers are hired based on bidding. The highest bidder gets the route of his choice. They have the lowest income as compared to City and Rural Carriers.
Women’s also stepped in this industry since the 1880s. The records in the postal department have no gender listings, the two well known women as women carrier were, Miss Susanna A Brunner in New York and Miss Westman in Oregon in the 1880. The aviation industry introduced Airmail and the first mail women pilot was Katherine Stinson, she apparently threw a few mailbags from her plane in 1913 at Montana State Fair. World War I appointed first women carriers. The women’s now contribute nearly 40% of the Mail Carrier Industry.
Becoming a mail carrier is not difficult here are a few steps that will help you in becoming a mail carrier.
Steps:
- Keep one thing in mind, if you become a mailman you will have to work with the government. People working in the postal services have many benefits. They have pay raise frequently, paid sick leaves, vacation leaves, also health, and life insurance.
- When you are applying for becoming a mailman, you have to be patient. It will take approximately two years or more to get a job. The entire procedure begins with an entrance postal exam.
- The post office in your locality can help you with the postal exam dates. You can also get books to prepare for the exams these will be available at any bookstore. You can look out for the book Master in Postal Exam by Dawn Rosenberg and John Gosney. This book is very helpful. To pass in the examination you have to get a score of 70 percent. If you score higher, it will be easier for you to get a job.
- Be prepared to carry a bag of mails everyday, which weighs up to 70 pounds. You will also have to undergo a physical exam as well as a drug test.
- You need to have an official driver’s license. You also need to have a record of safe driving. There are a few mailman who distribute mail on foot. Most of the mailman’s are required to drive a mail truck. If you are planning to apply for a position, which will require you to drive, then you will have to pass the exam of Postal Service road test.
