A mortician is also known as the funeral director or undertaker. A professional mortician is a degree holder from the Mortuary College they are professionals in funeral rites and services. The basic work of a mortician is to wrap up the dead body and cremate or bury it, also to plan the agreement for the funeral services. Many times the morticians are also asked to dress up the dead body, place it in a coffin and apply cosmetics or jewelry.
The mortician business has expanded and now they offer services like providing a minister to the families who do not have a church membership. The funeral service is a family business now. The family mortician business is very famous in the west they have a specially designed funeral rooms with a display room, a preparation room for wrapping the body, a small chapel and a selection room for coffins.

In the UK, many morticians belong to the British Institute of Funeral Directors. Anyone who has a diploma in funeral directing can be a member of this organization.
In US, there are courses right after your secondary schooling like course for funeral services and mortuary science. Every state in US has their license for morticians. The basic requirement in US is secondary education and a pass out from a National Broad Examination and an experience of two years as a trainee.

Becoming a mortician is very difficult. here are a few steps that will help you in becoming a mortician.
Steps:
- Before entering this business do a thorough research on funeral services. Make sure that this career is well suited for you. Try to speak to the local morticians and ask them about their experiences. You can also go and visit them for an entire day to see what kind of work a mortician does.
- While you are getting a degree in funeral services, take up a part time job at the local funeral place. A trainee experience is necessary and is required by many of them.
- Every state has various requirements for giving a license to the morticians. Go through the Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers of your state/country. Then list out the colleges that provide the required course. Make sure that the college is certified for the course.
- Try to get a degree in mortuary science from a certified college. Apply for a trainee job at a local funeral service house and work there for at least three years. You can do this while you are completing your course or after that.
- Get yourself a certificate from the State Board of Health, stating that you are vaccinated against diseases like tetanus, diphtheria and hepatitis B.
- Make sure to complete your course and the International Conference of Funeral Service Examining Board. This conference covers all the funeral services like sociology of funeral service psychology and counseling.
- Some provinces or states require you to renew your certificate after a certain period. Enquire about that you might have to renew you certificate as well.
