If you are crazy about fitness and take it seriously and like bossing people around with the same passion for fitness then you might want to consider being a personal trainer as a career choice. Follow the following step to understand what you will need to do to be a personal trainer.

- Skills: Take a look at yourself and see if you have what it takes to be a personal trainer. A personal trainer will require to have a lot of skills. You will have to be patient, analytical, persistent, nurturing, an effective motivator, organized and very importantly you will have to be a good listener. You will ahve to love working with all kinds of people and be able to motivate yourself. Being a personal trainer you dont have to have to body of a bodybuilder but you must follow a healthy enough lifestyle to set a good example for the people you will work with.
- Qualification: There are many organizations out there which offer different kinds of classes and workshops, and exams to obtain a certification. You will want to get a certification from a good nationally recognized and /or an accredited one. If you have decided what clup you want to join call them and ask them about their certification programs. If you are not sure where you want to work then do some research on the websites of the biggest players and try to find out: cost of certification, if it is available in your area, and the pre-requisites.
- Specialty: Although this is not mandatory, in todays competitive world, most fitness trainers opt in for specialty certifications to boost their credibility. Having a specialty certifications is a sign that you will have a lot more to offer and also gives you the permission to charge a lot more. An example would the ACE’s certification in Clinical Exercise Specialist which will allow you to do work with people with injuries or chronic diseases.
- Getting a Job: Call all the clubs in and around you area. Ask them if they employ or have an opening for personal trainers. Offer your services and proceed to fill out their application form. You can visit the websites of major clubs in your area to find what kind of jobs they have to offer.
- Marketing yourself: Once you are settled its time to make yourself famous. Print some flyers, business cards, put an ad in the newspaper and open your own website. Go around and sell yourself. Stick some flyers or hand them out at your local sports store and fitness clubs. Distribute business cards to your clients. Offer some free consultations and/ or put up some free guides on your website. Do what it takes to make yourself known and you will soon have a horde of people flocking to be trained by you.
- Be indispensable: Being successful at being a personal trainer takes skill, experience and talent. Having a certification might get you some clients but that doesn’t mean they have to stay with you. Improve your people skills and your training skills. Consider getting a few more certifications. Always be nice a caring about your clients. These steps are a good start to becoming a good personal trainer, have patience and work diligently and over time you will be the best at what you do.
