In medical term, a person who practices surgery is known as surgeon. Surgery is a wide group of invasive medical treatment, which includes the cutting of a body (human or animal), for a particular reason, like taking away a damaged or diseased organ or for treatment. Preparing for a career in surgeon:
- First of all, research about medicine as a career. Ensure that you are avid about the medical profession and you are ready to work for long hours.
- Inquire about the medical career with your counsellors in your high school. You can also get in touch with the advisors in your universities or colleges.
- Inquire about the syllabus in medical school. Comprise them in your four year college prospectus.
- To get admission in good medical colleges, you will have to take the ‘Medical College Admission Test’ (MCAT).
- Inquire about the medical schools. Also, look for the ’schools of osteopathic medicine’. Doctors of osteopathy (DOs) share the same rights and privileges as the doctors of medicine (MDs).
- In the third year of your college, you should apply for admission to the medical college in which you are willing to study and secure funding.
Becoming a plastic surgeon:
- You will have to complete your third year of clinical rotations, before getting into speciality.
- Inquire about the plastic surgery through its governing board, which is the ‘American Board of Plastic Surgery’.
- You will have to serve a rotation or externship with a plastic surgeon.
- Inquire about the different trails for becoming a plastic surgeon. Choose if you want to pursue your course from the independent model.
- There is a three-year general surgical residency followed by another three-year plastic surgery residency. You can also go for the integrated model, a six to seven year residency course, which contains the entire surgical training.
- If you want to go for independent model, then take admission in residency corresponding program for three-year broad surgery residency. If you want to pursue in integrated model, then you can go for residency corresponding program for six-year integrated plastic surgery residency.
- Secure your job opportunity early in the last year of your plastic surgery residency.
- Fulfil the requirement for board qualifications. These requirements are explained by the ‘American Board of Plastic Surgery’.
