A repossession collector man must have good detective skills and should be able to collect debts from people.

  • First, you must decide if this profession is the right choice for you. Always remember that being a repo man is not easy for everyone. This works requires taking priced possessions from people to clear their debt. If a debt collector is unable to get someone to pay his dues, then he or she hires a repo man. You can talk to some people who have worked as recovery agents in the past. If there are economic crises, then you have a fair chance to earn a lot of money.
  • In the beginning, you can take up a small job in the repossession agency. This job will give you a good opportunity to speak with some experienced repo people. In this way you gather as mush knowledge as possible.
  • You can also convince one of the repo men to take you along on one of their recoveries. Most of the repossessions are done in a peaceful manner; you will get a hint if you are suited for this career or not.
  • These agents work odd hours and sometimes they work on weekends as well. If you will be able to fit into this criterion, then you can start working as a repo man.
  • Repossession agents have to undergo some training. There are many online sites, which teach you how to become a repo man. Enquire in your locality if you need a license to become a repo man. These requirements can vary in every state. 
  • Your job as a repo man will be taking possessions of vehicles regularly, so you must have a tow truck. Make sure that you have a Commercial Driver’s License. If you are living in the US, then you can find all this information in US department of transportation.
  • According to the CDL laws, you will have to give an entrance exam. Every state needs to administer these tests to issue a CDL license. Search for some general rules of repossessions in your locality. The American Recovery Association will have an entire list of every state’s requirement.
  • The general criterion to be a repo man is that you have be at least 18 years old. There should be no convictions of felony in your record.
  • Some states will want you to work with the police and will ask you to contact them before repossession of people’s property. Sometimes, you will have to come to a local police station with some paperwork of your repossession like:
    • The repossession date
    • The time limit for this entire operation
    • The police branch number
    • Badge number and name of the officer you spoke to
