A tour guide is also known as tourist guide. A tour guide is the one who helps with all the information. The guides organize the tours for educational institutions, pre organized tours, clients, and these tours are usually organized at historical monuments, religious temples and other places. The tour guides are qualified regional tour guides.

According to the definition given by the European Standardization, a tour guide is someone who is your guide, who shows you around the various culture and traditions of that area. The European Federation of Tourist Guide Associations usually represents the tour guides in Europe. To become a tourist guide there are a certain qualification required, and they differ in all the countries. In many countries, the qualification also varies in every region.

Guiding people is a talent it is to gather all the important information. A good tourist guide is the one, who presents all the information in a simple yet exact way.  Here are a few ways that will help you in becoming a tour guide.

  • If you have to become a successful tour guide, make sure that you have patience and good communication skills. You have to be comfortable with different working hours. It is the most important thing if you want to be a tour guide.
  • You can also get training and be a certified tour guide from the International Tour Management Institute or any local institute. Getting a degree is not considered important but this will help you in getting a better job.
  • Try to work with a local tour company. If the company is well renowned, then you will have more work and you will get to travel to many places.
  • Get hired in a company who has their headquarters in your own country. This will increase your chances for traveling abroad. It is an easier than getting a job as a tourist with companies abroad.
  • If you are planning to work with a small company, then work as a freelancer instead of an employee. In this case, you will have to arrange your own insurance.
  • You will have to save a lot of money if you are working with a company. The company will cover your traveling, hotel charges and other expenses.
  • Do a brief research about the place you will tour. The company you are working for will you provide you with the area information. However, it is always good to know a little more. Your will be confident enough, and all the people will be impressed with your extensive knowledge. It will help you in getting many tips and free publicity by your tour people.
  • You need to have good organizing skills. You must be able to manage you time and details effectively. At times, you will also be responsible for many things like accommodations, transport, meals and many more.
  • Make sure you are calm especially at tricky situations like, monsoon hits, bus failure, if the hotel is full, sick health of a client.
  • Do not take a lot of personal time out. Try to be enthusiastic your group members will enjoy your company.
