Blogging is the latest pastime for people all over the world with internet access. Everybody, no matter what his profession age or occupation can blog whatever he/she likes. There are different kinds of blogs, including, but not limited to, professional blogs, social blogs and personal blogs. Think of a topic and you will notice someone or the other has blogged it. Some people blog as a pastime while some blog to earn money. The advent of internet makes it possible for anyone to express thoughts freely to the world. No matter what your topic is, if you want to be a better blogger, be more popular and widely read, follow the following steps.

- Ask yourself the reason you want to blog. Ask yourself the purpose of putting up a blog. Is your blog a public diary or is it a journal of your work. It can even be your ideas and thoughts about the world or anything in general or can be a place to share your favorite links.
- You can also have a blog with all of the above content and more if you want to. But remember people might return to your blog more often if its specializing in their field of interest. Its better if your blog has a well defined theme as this will attract more readers.
- Make your blog visually appealing. The last thing you want is to lose readers thanks to a bad looking blog. The best design to pick depends on your theme and the audience you attract.
- Set different colors, graphics, include pictures and experiment with font styles. Remember whatever theme you pick, avoid dark on dark, or tiny unreadable fonts etc. Make it attractive as well as easy to read.
- Decide how you want your site to be. Follow a structure. Make a good site map which can be easily followed. Add a search engine to your site.
- If you use comments and / or RSS feeds, it should be crystal clear to visitors how to use these features. Make archives and organize posts in a logical manner. Make different categories so that posts will be easy to find.
- Online visitors are very fickle. Once you start getting regular readers they will expect you to upload content regularly. If readers think you have abandoned the blog, they will stop visiting too. If you even have to take a break from writing or go on a prolonged vacation, it’s a good idea to let your blog followers know. A small post citing your reasons and giving them a date of when you will be back will keep your readers happy.
- Always proof read your articles before posting. Even if you are extremely proficient with the language, you are bound to make a few mistakes here and there every once in a while.
- You might not catch the mistakes in your own writing and hence might want a friend of yours to read it for you. Alternatively leave a gap of few hours, before you actually proof read it yourself.
- Correct all your grammatical mistakes, even small ones like a misplaced comma can change the meaning of your sentence.
- Market yourself. Post links to your blogs on your facebook account or other social networking sites. If you are a part of some forums, especially ones which are related to your blog, add the link to your signature.
- Following the above step will enable to build up a reader base quickly. If you want to make money out of your blog you might want to consider google ads or a donation button. Have fun writing.
