Before learning how to calculate absolute neutrophil count, let us know what absolute neutrophil count is. Absolute neutrophil count is the number of neutrophils in a milliliter of blood. Absolute neutrophil count or ANC helps us to measure and study a person’s immunity status. When the count of ANS of a person falls below a certain level, it is dangerous to his immune system. It is compulsorily calculated before conducting chemotherapy in a person.
The unit of measuring ANS is cells/milliliter. In a normal person the count of ANS should be over 1000 cells/milliliter. If absolute neutrophil count of a person falls below 500 cells/milliliter, then it indicates that the person is neutropheinac. Neutrophils are a type of white blood cells in the blood that are responsible for fighting against diseases. A person who is neutropheinac has less resistance to fight infections.
Calculating absolute neutrophil count
- To calculate absolute neutrophil count, you need to carry out complete blood count or CBC. Complete blood count is also known as full blood count or FBC. Complete blood count measures the levels of white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets in the blood.
- From the above measurements, you need to use the measurement of white blood cells in the calculation of your absolute neutrophil count.
- You will also need to use the measurements of the polys and bands from your CBC. In your blood, polys are the segmented neutrophils or granulocytes which are the major constituent of our white blood cells.
- Bands are the segmented bands or the stabs, sometimes called as segs; these are the immature polys.
- Therefore, to measure absolute neutrophil count, multiply your white blood cells count to the sum of segmented bands and segmented neutrophils.
The formula for calculating absolute neutrophil count is given as:
ANC = Total WBC count × (% neutrophils + % bands) × 10
Steps to calculate absolute neutrophil count
- Step 1: Calculate your WBC count and the count of polys and bands on your CBC. For example, consider your WBC count to be 2.0 whereas the count of polys is 14.8%, count of bands is 5%.
- Step 2: Add the number of polys and bands. Therefore, adding the above values of polys and bands we get,
14.8 + 5 = 19.8
- Step 3: Multiply the sum of polys and bands to the calculated value of WBC.
Therefore,
2.0 × 19.8 = 39.6
- Step 4: Now, multiply the obtained value by 10.
Therefore,
ANC = 39.6 × 10 = 396
Therefore, the absolute neutrophil count of the person is 396. Hence, from this value we can conclude that the person is neutropheinac as his neutrophil count is below 500 milliliter.
Absolute neutrophil count is measured before carrying out treatment on a person suffering from severe diseases. Usually before treating a person with chemotherapy, we need know neutrophil count of that person. This helps us to know the ability of person to fight against the disease and his response to the treatment.
