How to Calculate Angles

There are basically three types of angles; right angle, acute angle and obtuse angle. Right angles are those whose measure is 900 and angles that are smaller than 900 are called as acute angles’ while obtuse angles are larger than 900 . These angles can be easily measured if you know how to calculate angles. Some of the methods of calculating angles are explained below.

Some angles like the angles those are right-angled can be easily measured just looking at them. These angles have a perpendicular drawn on the base or the horizontal segment. If your angle is a straight line then this angle is of 180 degrees. Those angles whose measurement cannot be recognized at a glance are calculated using a protractor. Using a protractor you can easily measure all types of angles.

Protractor is a mathematical instrument used to measure the angles. It is semicircular or circular in shape. Semicircular protractors are used to measure angles while circular protractors are used to measure circles. A semicircular protractor measures angles up to 180 degrees. It usually measures angles in degrees

At the bottom of the protractor is a straight line or a horizontal line and a perpendicular bisector bisects this straight line. This straight line indicates an angle of 90 degrees. The angles which lie on the right side of this straight line are less than 90 degrees and are acute while those that lie on the left side of this line are more than 90 degrees and are obtuse angles. The point at which these two lines meet is the centre of the protractor.

While measuring an angle using a protractor place the centre of the protractor at the point of contact of the two lines making the angle. Make sure that the straight line of the protractor is correctly lined up with the horizontal leg of the angle. The other leg of the angle should be pointing semicircle or round edge of the protractor. The point at which this edge of the angle points is the measure of the angle. Read the degree of the angle and note it down and you are done with measuring the angle. The lines are very small, so it may be quite difficult to measure the angle. Double – check to make sure that you read the angle correctly.

If you want to verify whether you have correctly measured the angle then check whether your angle is an acute angle or obtuse angle. This can be done easily just by looking at the angle. If your angle is an acute angle and you have read the measurement more than 90 degrees then you need to measure the angle once again. If your angle is an obtuse angle and you read it less than 90 degrees then measure it once again.

If you want to calculate angles of a triangle then there are various methods to calculate them. You can measure them either using a protractors or a number of mathematical methods. These methods include Pythagoras theorem, trigonometric method and using calculators available online.
