How to Calculate Area of Hexagon

Hexagon is a polygon with six edges and six vertices. It is found that the sum of the angles in a regular hexagon is 720. In case of a regular hexagon the length of all the sides is same. In this article on how to calculate area of hexagon we will know to calculate area of a regular hexagon using simple formula.

Area of hexagon is represented in square units.

Calculating area of hexagon from the length of its side:

The formula for calculating area of hexagon is given as,

A = (3 √3/2) t2

In the above formula,

  • “A” is the area of a hexagon
  • “t” is the length of side of hexagon

The value of 3√3/2 is approximately 2.5980, so the formula for area of hexagon can be written as,

Area of hexagon = 2.5980 t2

To calculate area of hexagon you simply need to know the measurement of the side of the hexagon. As measure of all the sides of hexagon is same you can calculate the length of any side of the hexagon and place it in the above formula to get the area of hexagon calculated.

Calculating area of hexagon from the length of its side and distance between the parallel sides:

Another alternative formula for calculating area of hexagon is as given follows,

Area of hexagon = 1.5 d t

In the above formula,

  • “d” is the distance between the parallel sides of hexagon
  • “t” is the length of side of hexagon

To calculate area of hexagon using the above formula, calculate the measure of side of the hexagon and the distance between any parallel sides of the hexagon. As hexagon is a symmetrical shape all its sides as well as the parallel distance between any of the sides of a hexagon is same. Place the calculated values in the above formula and perform necessary calculations.

Make sure that all the units are compatible with each other i.e. if you calculated the length of side in cm then it is necessary that you measure the distance between the parallel sides in cm only.

In the above formula “d” can also be the length of the diameter of the circle that is inscribed within the hexagon.

Calculating area of hexagon using the formula for calculating area of triangle:

When we join the opposite vertices of the hexagon will see six equilateral triangles within the hexagon with the sides of the hexagon as the base for each triangle. Therefore, the formula for calculating area of a hexagon in this case is given as,

Area of a hexagon = 6 ((1/2) × L × H)

In the above formula,

  • “L” is the length of side of triangle
  • “H” is the height of triangle

Determine the length of side of any triangle and the perpendicular height of any of the triangle. Place these values in the above formula. As the area of the hexagon is occupied by six triangles of same measurement, we multiply the area value by six so that we get the area of the hexagon.
