‘Wood flooring’ is a product which is designed for use for floor covering and visual aesthetics. It is manufactured from wood. ‘Bamboo flooring’ is also believed to be wood flooring, though it is made up of grass not wood. Wood flooring is available in two types, solid and engineered. ‘Solid wood flooring’ comes in large range of styles, shapes and sizes. Solid wood floors were basically used for structural purposes. In modern techniques, solid wood flooring is rarely used for building wooden frame for flooring.
Solid wood has various restrictions for flooring, because of the nature and characteristics of the wood. Woods have the property of contraction and expansion due to changes in atmosphere such as, moisture and humidity. ‘Engineering wood flooring’ is a popular choice for every house; it is made of two or more layers of wood in the form of boards.

Engineered wood flooring is of two types
- Wood ply construction: it is also known as sandwich core, it consists of numerous thin plies of wood sticks together.
- Finger core construction: it is manufactured from the small pieces of crushed timber. Finger core flooring can be of 2ply or 3 ply, depending on their planned use.
Engineering wood flooring is most popular wood flooring across the globe. North America is the single nation which has a larger market share of ’solid wood flooring’ compared to ‘engineered wood flooring’.
