To keep your bike in good working condition you need to keep it clean. For a lot of people cleaning is just one of the greatest pleasures of owning your own bike while for others its pure drudgery. No matter how you look at it cleaning your bike is an important task. There are different levels of cleaning. A full all out cleaning may require you to dismantle most of the bike before cleaning it. A simple cleaning procedure will include a wash and simple wax. To clean just for the show you will get away with just cleaning the external parts. To maintain your bike you must perform detailed cleaning every once in a while. Follow the following steps to clean your bike throughly.
Items Required:
- Cleaning agent
- Bucket
- Degreaser
- WD40
- Rag/ Sponge
- Wax spray
Instructions:
- Squirt some amount of your cleaning agent inside the clean bucket. Fill in some warm water till the foam from the solution is at the bucket edge. (Do not use potwash / washing up detergents as such cleaning agents contain chemicals which will hasten the corrosion on your bike)
- Use the degreaser and spread it over the extremely dirty areas of your bike. That is areas like the engine area, the wheels and the chain area. Use a rag to wipe off the degreaser you have applied. This will loosen up the dirt making it easier to clean with water and soap.
- Soak or spray some more of the degreaser on the rag and wipe the chain clean. Rotate the rear wheel while clasping the chain it to clean entirely. If possible try to scrub the rear suspension and swing arm area. Old and stubborn grease or oil marks will take some time to clean.
- Use a sponge and a bucket of clean water to get the bike wet all over. Now wash the bike throughly. Spend extra time on dirty areas such as the wheels and the rear suspension area as well as the number plates. Use this opportunity to wash off any left over degreaser.
- Wash once more with a bucket of warm water. Be careful of the electrical parts. It might be a good idea to spray WD40 over before soaking in water. You can use a hose instead of a bucket and sponge if you have one.
- Leave the bike alone for 5-15 minutes to allow the water to drain then move the motorcycle to a clean and dry spot.
- Use chamois leather to dry the entire surface of the motorbike. Before starting the engine dry the engine throughly to avoid problems.
- Use a chain lube or wax spray and coat the bike chain with this. Follow the instructions avaiable on the can of spray.
- Cover your bikes swing arm with WD40 without getting any on the disc of the rear rake. Use the rag you had to wipe the WD40.
- Take another clean rag and use it to apply bike polish to bike exteriors. Once dry use a lint free cloth to get the extra wax off.
- Apply some Brasso or Autosol to a different clean rag and use it to clean the brake, clutch leavers, foot pegs and forks etc.
