How to Clean Concrete

“Concrete” is a material which is used for the manufacture of buildings. The word “concrete” has been derived from a Latin word “concretus”. Concretus means compressed or condensed. This material is composed of cement (mainly Portland cement) and other cement materials including slag cement, fly ash, water, chemical mixture, and aggregate( limestone, gravel, granite, and sand).

Concrete becomes hard and solid after putting water and placement, due to a chemical process known as hydration. The water reacts with concrete to bond other chemical together, thus they form a stone- like material. Concrete also use to construct channels, asphalt road, and architectural structures, bridge, bricks, motorways, roads, foundations, etc.

The appropriate cleaning process for the concrete floor depends on what type of floor you ARE going to clean, a cleaning standard concrete (i.e. garage floor) or internal decorative concrete. Follow the following steps to use proper technique to clean your concrete floor.

Step one: cleaning decorative concrete

Concrete floor is very popular among the homeowners, due to its stain-resistance feature and durability.

  • Things required:
  • Warm water
  • Wet mop
  • Bucket
  • Mild cleaner
  • Dust mop
  • Broom

Instructions:

  • Brush off your concrete floor and remove all garbage from it.
  • Mop up the concrete floor to remove any remaining dust and fine particles.
  • Put about one gallon of hot water in a bucket and add some amount dish soap or cleaner in it. Avoid using ammonia and vinegar, they can ruin your floor.
  • Wet you cleaning mop in the mixture and squeeze methodically.
  • Wipe the floor in sections, keep squeezing and rinsing your mop frequently.
  • Fill the bucket again with fresh warm water and mop the floor again to wipe put any remaining hint of soap.
  • Step two: cleaning standard concrete:
  • This kind of floor needs a regular and deep cleaning.

Things required:

  • Shop Vac
  • Push Broom
  • Hose with spray nozzle attachment
  • Power washer
  • Dry granular cleaner, i.e. comet

Instructions:

  • Clean your garage properly
  • Wipe out all dust and garbage from it.
  • Connect THE hose to water supply and turn it on in full speed.
  • Spray water on entire floor by using the hose attachment on its strongest setting. Splash the water at the every corner and crevices of the floor, where dirt and stains tend to mount up.
  • Shower the entire concrete floor with cleaner, while the floor is still wet.
  • Rub the cleaner in the floor by using push broom.
  • Wash it again properly by using hosepipe.
  • If the garage floor is tremendously dirty, then you can borrow a power washer from your neighbor or any retail shop.

Step two: removing stains from concrete

In this step, you will see how to remove oil, grease, and tire marks from your concrete floor.

  • Oil: spread bleach on stained area by using a spray bottle. Allow it to sit for 30 minutes. Scrub the stain or dirt by using scrub brush and wash it well. Avoid contact of bleach to your skin and eyes.
  • Grease: apply a thick layer of “Kitty litter” over the stain. Let it dry fro three to four days. Wipe out the kitty litter and dispose of in the trash. If the stain remains, then squeeze the stained area with dry concrete mix. Allow it to sit for four days. Wipeout the dry concrete and avoid concrete to expose in sewer, toilet or sink, it will cause plumbing problems.
  • Tire marks: spread water on the stained area and use an over-the-counter degreaser, such as orange citrus concentrate. Allow the paste to get dry for three to four hours. Rub it with a scrub brush and wash it well.

Tips and warnings:

  • Few people use “muriatic acid” to remove heavy stains from their garage. Avoid using muraitic acid, since it is a highly reactive acid, and one of the most dangerous chemicals.
  • Rebuff you floor regularly to maintain its shine and looks. You can use high speed buffer with white pad.
  • If you want to enhance the beauty and protect your floors, you should reseal them after every four to five years.
  • SealING helps the concrete floors become stain resistant.
