A stuffed animal is also known as a stuffed toy, plush toy, stuffie, cuddly toys or plushies. A stuffed toy is made from cloth or other fabrics. It is made puffy by filling in straw beans, cotton, plastic pellets or other material. The stuffed toys are of various shapes and sizes like cartoon characters, animal shapes, famous creatures and many more.
The first stuffed toy was a homemade doll, with straw stuffing’s in 1830s. The most famous stuffed toy is a teddy bear. The term ’stuffed animal’ was previously used for stuffing the hunted animals. However, these day’s stuffed animals are made with fiber. Steiff Company made the first advertisement of stuffed toys in 1880.
Stuffed toys are the most perfect gifts. One can give it on any special day like birthdays, Valentine’s Day, friendship day and graduation party. Stuff toys can get dirty with time. Here are a few steps on how to clean your soft toys.
Ingredients:
- Cloth piece (soft)
- A fur free roller or a vacuum cleaner
- A brush
- Detergent
- Washing machine
- A pillowcase with zipper
- Baking soda (if required)
Procedure:
- To clean the stuff toys, begin by wiping it with a wet piece of cloth. Once you finish cleaning the toy, brush it gently with a help of a brush. Never use styling products on your stuff toys. A brush with plastic bristles it advised.
- If you are planning to use a vacuum brush to clean the soft toys, then use a long or short pile adjustment. Make sure that you do not vacuum the accessories of the toys.
- Look out for spots and stains. Before using any cleaner on your toys, test it on a section of their fur before. Let that tested area dry for sometime and brush it off later. If you see any kind of discoloration on the tested area, choose another cleaner.
- You can also make your cleaner at home by mixing 3 tbsp of dish soap, ΒΌ tsp of ammonia and 3/4 of water. Apply this mixture to the stained area with a wet cloth.
- One can also wash the toys in the machine, but before doing this make sure that you check the label for warnings and instructions. Before washing it in the machine, take out the batteries from the toys if any.
- Then put the toys in a pillowcase with a zipper and use the gentle cycle mode of the machine. Fabric softeners are great to make the toys soft. If the toy is old do not wash in the machine. To get rid of bad odor from the old toys, you can keep them in paper bag with a little baking soda in it.
- Do not put large toys over 18 inches in the washing machine. If you have toys, which are stuffed with foam beads, fiberfill or plastic stiffeners do not put them in the washing machine.
Never put the stuffed toys in the dryer, there are chances they may loose their shape or shrink. Instead, hang them up in a clothesline or you can also place them right next to a dehumidifier. The dehumidifier may take a lot of time but it will surely prevent any kind of damage to the toy.
