How to Control Anger

Anger is one of the biggest elements, which causes destruction in people’s life. Anger can make or mar a relationship whether it is professional or personal. It is not only harmful from the outside but can stress you from within as well. Whenever things don’t go according to your plan or someone does not listen to you, as the general human nature you tend to get angry. However, this anger should be controlled at the right time. The main question is how to control anger? The following article will give you some helpful tips on how to control anger.

Steps:

  • First, you will have to understand the main reason behind your anger and understand the reason of it. Decide if the anger is legitimate or not, or it is due to expectation.

Legitimate anger

  • One is entitled to be angry with those people who harm, cheat, steal or lie to you in some way. One can get angry at legitimate situations like incest, orphan, rape or various other things. In these situations, the anger of a person is justified and quite natural for the person to get angry. The justified anger can be shown with frustration, where one is not able to rectify the cause, either because it is done in the past or because you cannot change it. If you tend to dwell on this anger then it can cause extreme emotional conditions, racing of thoughts and adrenaline rush.
  • You must learn to deal with legitimate anger. For instance, one would not expect to get robbed and when one does get robbed anger will be a natural reaction. However, the bitterness and anger will only increase the perpetuity. You will allow the perpetrator to control your feelings, not only in your past but in your present as well.
  • You must realize that anger can become your identity. People will consider you as a person who roars constantly. However, it will give you the power to get things done your way, but do not misuse this power. You must know ways to channel your anger for better things. You must focus your anger on motivating yourself or to become whatever you want to.
  • Always remember that the root cause of depression is anger. Therefore, in most of the cases anger must be suppressed, so that it does not cause any harm to you. Never let it become the source of humiliation or shame, because one will seethe with it if not released. In this way, you will push it into your unconscious mind causing depression.
  • Keep in mind that, unresolved anger can be directed at other people. It is not fair on your part to take out your anger on other people. You must decide the fault with personal assessment. You must never take the blame for other people’s misconduct. Learn to purge the anger, this is one of the most important things and you can do it in various ways. Never get revenge even when you think that the other person deserves it.
  • Accept things, once done is done and you must keep moving along. You must get over all the negative things that can affect your life. Realize and forgive that under certain circumstances in your life, even you would have done the same thing.

Expectation anger

  • This anger is something that one creates on his or her own choosing, or will get this habit from their friends and family. Anger will arise when the expectations are not met. When the reality does not meet the expectations, one will get angry. The only way to solve this anger is by changing the behavior of the person.
  • You must never expect others to have the same standards and values as yourself. Never think that people who make you angry are doing it intentionally, they are doing it because they have different standards. If you are getting angry with someone then go ahead and tell that person that they are annoying you.
  • If you have high expectations from other people, then even it may cause anger. Anger can be created by keeping impossible expectations and imposing them on people. Always remember that imposing your expectation on others is fascist. Allow them to live their own life; you must learn to avoid certain things in people around you.
  • If something has made you angry, then you must express it immediately in an intelligent and calm manner. Always keep in mind that, in relationships expectations should be known to both the people and it should be according to their capacity.
  • Change your expectations to deal with anger. You can lower or increase your expectations according to people or circumstances. Remember that it will be useless expecting a dog to follow religion, and the failure of this will cause nothing but disappointment and anger.
  • You must always inform others about your cause of anger and try to solve the problem by making a compromise. Relationships can end if you do not come up with a solution and let anger rule you.

Circumstantial anger

  • Anger at certain circumstances can be the toughest to control, since you cannot change it. For instance, it is like children not liking their family. In such situations, you must learn to accept the situations the way they are. Learn about your own abilities and do not let other people’s inability affect you. It will help if you accept things the way they are and never keep unrealistic expectations.

Tips and Warnings:

  • If all the above-mentioned things fail, you can join an anger management group. Whenever you sense that you are getting angry, take deep breaths and start counting till ten. This exercise will help you calm down.
  • If you notice that anger is taking over, take yourself out of that situation before things go out of hand.
  • To solve the problem you can join yoga classes as well, it will allow you to focus on your feelings and will allow you to release stress.

Sing a happy song to divert your mind. You must always look for something, which will help you in releasing your anger.
