How to Control Dandruff

No matter who are you, many of us at some point or other may have faced the problem of dandruff. This is a very embarrassing condition, which is worse for some people. For this, you must know how to control dandruff, so that you can function easily without worrying about anything.

There are many approaches towards treating dandruff, which you can take to keep your condition in check. Most of you may have heard, considered or even tried some of the treatments before. The strategies mentioned below are very effective towards controlling dandruff once and for all. Here are some simple steps on how to control dandruff.

Steps:

  • One of the reasons for dandruff to occur frequently is excess oily and flaky scalp. For this, you will have to shampoo everyday, so that you can control your flaky scalp without much effort.
  • Keep switching shampoos. If the current shampoo that you are using is not that effective for controlling the dandruff, then you must discontinue using this shampoo and use a different anti-dandruff shampoo. Find an anti-dandruff shampoo, which contains zinc pyrithione, salicylic acid, sulfur and selenium sulfide.
  • Have you noticed that your anti-dandruff shampoo becomes less effective with time? This happens because your scalp builds up a resistance with the active ingredients of the shampoo. For avoiding this, you must keep rotating between two to three brands of dandruff shampoo, with each one having a different formulation. Keep using each shampoo for one month and not more than that. In simpler words, use one shampoo for the first month, another one for the second month and so on.
  • Always remember that you must lather twice. The first lather and rinse will get rid of the loose flakes and all the oil buildup on your scalp and hair. Now, when you lather for the second time, you must leave the shampoo on your head for five minutes before you rinse it. This will allow your shampoo to enter the skin cells and control the dandruff effectively.
  • If you can, try using tar, because if the first few steps fail to work, then you can try using the tar shampoos. For more than 200 years, tar shampoos have been considered as the most effective treatment for treating dandruff. The job of tar is to reduce the turnover of the cell. However, there are a few negative side effects. All the tar shampoos have a strong odor, they can stain the shaft of your light hair (if you use mild shampoo for weeks you can get rid of the discoloration) and these shampoos irritate the skin.
  • If you still happen to use tar shampoo and want to get rid of the tar odor, then you can try rinsing your hair with lemon juice or a crème conditioner. Using a conditioner along with the anti-dandruff shampoo will give good results as well. The medicated anti-dandruff shampoos make the hair stiff and less manageable; conditioner will cover up for this damage.
  • Always remember that you must be sensitive to your sensitivity. If you have a sensitive skin and a sensitive scalp then you must never use tar shampoo. The shampoo can inflame the follicles of your hair, which will cause a condition of folliculitis and irritate your skin. A milder shampoo can work well for you.
  • Never scratch your itchy scalp. If you continue scratching on the itchy patches, then it can cause wounds. If this happens, then you must immediately discontinue the use of medicated shampoo for a few days. Try using a milder shampoo like a baby shampoo; keep using it every day until all the scratches are completely healed.
  • Shower all your sweat away. A shower after a long tiring day or after your workout will make you feel clean and fresh. Once you have worked or exercised, go for a nice long shower and do not forget to shampoo your hair. Remember that sweat can make your scalp itchy, it will irritate your scalp, and it will automatically increase the flaking of your skin cells.
  • Always go easy on sticky things. Sprays, mousses and gels are the best friends of hairdos, since they help in keeping the hairstyle in one place and they will make it look better. However, you cannot ignore the fact that these products are the biggest enemies of your scalp and hair. These hair products will contribute for most of the oil build-up, so you must use them as rarely as possible.
  • Always be kind to yourself. Stress is one of the reasons for the dandruff and skin problems, because stress leads to proliferation of the skin cells. If you have a poor diet then it can stress you out and contribute on all the dermatitis conditions. Maintain a healthy, relaxed and balanced lifestyle.

So this is it! Try all the above-mentioned tips and you will soon have a healthy scalp and will not be conscious of all the flakes that keep falling on your shoulder. Do not forget, good hygiene is the key to keep away dandruff. Have a dandruff-free day!
