How to Control Frizzy Curly Hair

Many people will agree that curly hair is glorious. However, what they don’t know is that it is difficult to control the curls from being frizzy, especially in the humid weather. The best method to prevent frizz is through controlling the amount of moisture your hair is absorbing. Frizzy hair is porous that is craving for moisture. Therefore, the hair starts looking for moisture in all the wrong places. Most of the times, your hair will absorb the humidity from the air, and will lock it inside like a scouring pad. Your main motive should be feeding your hair with moisture, which it craves for, and avoiding it to absorb excessive moisture later on. Here are some steps on how to control frizzy curly hair.

Conditioner is the Key

  • You will have to start with conditioning your hair with a good moisturizer. The trick is to find a clean, light conditioner, which will feed your thirsty hair without trying to weigh it down. If you are blessed with naturally curly hair, using a heavy conditioner will make you look wilted and not wonderful. There are many conditioners that say, “no buildup” or “clean wash” on their label, these ones will be good to start from.
  • You can try using the products especially for curly hair. Most of the good brands will never leave a heavy residue, and they will help in energizing your natural curls as well.
  • Most of the people notice that after they have used the conditioner for a while it stops working. There are various reasons for this problem. No matter what the label of the conditioner says, buildup is there in most of the products. Unless you are using the same of the brand of shampoo as the conditioner, there will be some residue lingering on your hair even after you wash it.
  • Often you will be tempted to use clarifying shampoo for getting rid of the residue, and this will work fine only sometimes and not always. Clear shampoos tend to strip out the oil content from your hair and the moisture as well, which makes your hair look even frizzier. If you like the effects of the clarifying shampoo then, you must pick one that conditions your hair and not the one, which will make it more dry and dull.
  • Remember that every conditioning product will have different ingredients. Once your hair has taken in all the conditioning from the product, it will come to a saturation point. In this situation, you will have to change your product and give your hair the nutrients that it requires. You must always rotate your hair care products.

Deep Conditioning

  • Depending on how frizzy your hair tends to get, you will have to use a deep conditioner once in a week. These will be the products, which you will have to leave on your hair for nearly 20 minutes or as per mentioned on the label.
  • If you want some extra boost, then you can leave this conditioner on your hair for an hour or more. For activating the effects of this, you will have to wrap your hair with a plastic wrap while you are waiting for the conditioner to show its effects. Take a towel and wrap it around your head on the plastic wrap. This method will insulate your hair, so your body heat will help the conditioner to work in a better way.

Leave-In Conditioners

  • Leave-in conditioners will help a lot, but sometimes it can make your problems worse as well. If the product you are using is too heavy, then it will make your hair look greasy and limp. If the product is too light, then it will not work on your hair. You will find some of the people raving about the effects of inexpensive discount on the store products. While others will get effect only from the specialized salon products. Remember that this will be a trial and error method and it will best if you try the other approaches first.

When the hair is wet

  • When you go swimming or when you have a head wash, it is very essential that you style it while it is drying. Your hair will keep its shape due to the hydrogen bonds, but these bonds break as soon as you wash your hair and they start reforming once it dries.
  • Your hair will be heavy when you wash it, the weight of the water will hold the hair down while drying. This process will work to your advantage if you are styling your hair to look good. If you allow it to be like that, then it will look like you have styled it with a stick or just fell down from the bed.
  • You can scrunch the hair from the base to keep the curls intact. Or you can pin it up so that it does not get help down with its own weight. For people with naturally curly hair, you will just have to curl the layers on the top.

When the weather is not your friend

  • One of the biggest challenges for the people with curly hair is moisture in the air, when it’s drizzling or humid day. The top layer of your hair will start getting frizzy, defeating all your styling efforts. Therefore, you must carry a hat or scarf with you. To control the frizz you can use hair bands or head bands.

Silicone seals and products

  • If you are suffering from severe frizz problems, then sealing your hair will be the best option. There are many products with silicone, which prevent your hair from absorbing moisture later on. Just take out a dime size silicone in your hand and rub it on your hair evenly. Make sure that you apply it on your entire hair and not just on the outside. After you have used the silicone, never towel dry your hair or you will rub the silicone off. You can use a blow dryer or allow your hair to dry naturally.

Avoid Perms

  • Some of the permanent wave products will advertise that they help in reducing the frizz. However, the ingredients used in perming will make the hair more porous and prone to frizz. Therefore, use the other options for controlling the frizz instead of treating your hair with chemicals.
  • Instead, you can use the curling iron, where you can curl the base of your hair and not the roots. However, remember that the curls made with curling iron will last for a few hours only and you will have to touch-up after every few hours. Curling irons can dry your hair as well, so try to stick to some of the natural methods to reduce the frizz.

Curly hair can become completely frizz free if you know the right method. Make sure to use non-drying shampoos, light conditioners and carry a scarf or hat in humid weather.
