Spiders most of the times will not bother a human. However, most of the humans are scared of spiders and can do anything to avoid seeing a spider. There are some poisonous spiders, which you will not prefer messing with, like the black widow. If you notice that the spiders are getting inside your home and setting their camp, then you will have to do something for getting rid of them. Here are various methods on how to control spiders.
Hedge Apples
- Buy some hedge apples from the local grocery store or you can get them from the farmer’s market as well. Choose the hedge apples, which are green in color. All the brown hedge apples are overripe or they can be rotten as well. Hedge apples will be green in the fall season and sometimes in the early winter as well.
- If you live in an area where they grow hedge apples, then pluck them yourself. If you are picking hedge apples from a tree, then pluck them in such a way that you leave two inches of stem attached. This will avoid staining and leaking of hedge apples. Make sure that you ask permission from the landowner for removing the hedge apples, if it is a private property.
- Remember that you will have to wear plastic or rubber gloves when you are placing the hedge apples around the house. As the fruit starts to ripen, it will ooze a milky substance. This juice is never toxic but if you have sensitive skin then it can irritate your skin or will cause some allergies.
- Take the hedge apple and place it in a small bowl, on a piece of foil or plant tray. It is not important to be completely contained. However, as they start seeping the juice they can stain the flooring or some other materials. Therefore, you will have to put them in a receptacle of some kind.
- Place these hedge apples inside your closet, below the sink or around the perimeter of your home. One hedge apple in one area or closet is enough to keep away spiders. Remove the hedge apples once they have turned brown in color, which will usually happen within a month.
Eucalyptus and Lavender repellent
- Take one cup of water, empty spray bottle, 3 teaspoons of vodka, 5 drops of eucalyptus oil, 5 drops of lavender and 5 drops of basil essential oils. Take a little water and pour it inside the empty spray bottle. Add the vodka and start stirring it. This will form the base of your spider repellent.
- Now drop in the basil, lavender and eucalyptus oils inside the bottle. These oils are used because the smells of these repel spiders. Mix all these ingredients properly and place the lid on the bottle.
- Start spraying this solution on all the areas where you have spotted a spider or cobweb. Spray it on all the corners inside your house, as this is the most common place for the spiders to build the cobweb.
Tobacco
- Take a packet of chewing tobacco and soak it in a gallon of water. Once the water has cooled down, take out the tobacco. Now, take this juice and combine it with half lemon-scented dish soap. Spray this mixture in all the areas where you notice the spiders or where they are likely to hide. Re-spray all these areas after a month, more often if the problem of spiders increases.
Other natural repellents
- Try to keep both the outside and inside of your house free from clutter, giving the spiders very little place to hide. Move all the old vegetation and old wooden furniture from the exterior of your house. You will have to clip the tree branches, which are touching your house. Check inside your home for some cracks where spiders or any other bugs can enter and seal all the cracks that you find.
Tips and Warnings:
- Get a cat as they are the natural predators of spiders and they will attack anything that moves around in your house. They will be helpful in getting rid of most of the spiders from your house.
- Always remember that your natural repellent will not help in killing the spiders inside your home. It will only help in repulsing them, so that they can look for a new home for invading.
