How to Control Squirrels

If anyone has ever spent time watching the activity of squirrels, they might know that behind the cute furry creature is a pure contemplative evil. It does not matter how daring they seem, every little noise they make and hop they are making a plan for your destruction inside your home. Squirrels enjoy digging up the flowers and bulbs inside your home. One must know how to control squirrels because they carry ticks and fleas, which is not hygienic.

Here are some useful steps on how to control squirrels through some simple methods and not with poison. One must try to avoid poison for squirrels, because it will leave smelly carcasses in your yard or attic.

Squirrel proof bird feeders

  • A good squirrel bird feeder can be weight sensitive; few birds will not have an effect on this feeder. However, once the weight of the squirrel goes inside this, the feeding ports will automatically get closed or blocked. Some of the feeders are designed for sending the squirrels inside for an electric shock and most of them come with a lifetime guarantee.
  • You will have to buy a decent squirrel proof feeder and it is very easy to catch squirrels in one of these. Try buying the products from Droll Yankees, Wild Bill or Brome Bird. These feeders will last longer and will be helpful.

Use squirrel baffle

  • A squirrel baffle is one of the best options if used rightly. On a pole, place the top side of the baffle at least five meters away from the ground or else the squirrels will be able to jump on top of these. Also, make sure that your feeders are not hanging right below the baffle. You will have to make sure that it is hanging at least 10 feet away from the recent launching pad.

Placement of feeder pole/feeder

  • Always remember that squirrels are great jumpers. Therefore, you will have to place the feeder in an open space. If the squirrel is trying to jump from a higher position to a lower, then they can easily jump up to 15 feet. Therefore, you will have to keep an eye on the sky and always keep the feeder open. As long as there is some shelter close by, the birds will continue to feel safe and can come to visit. However, make sure that the feeder is places 10 feet away from the squirrel launching pad.

Sanitation

  • You will have to keep your home and the surroundings clean. If the squirrels do not find anything to eat, then they will never come. You will have to be diligent for picking up all the seeds and hulls, which are under the feeder or place a catch tray underneath it. Remember that you must not keep any kind of food outside. Squirrels are very happy to dine on pet chow, fruits, bread and scrapings from your grill. You will have to make sure that there is no food item left outside, which means you will have to get a tight lead for garbage bins.

Squirrel repellents

  • It is very difficult to keep the squirrels from digging flowers, bulbs and eating veggies. If you want to avoid this, then you will have to bury 8-12 inches below the ground, because fencing works the best. You will have to make sure that you will have to use a fence with a small mesh.
  • There are various squirrel repellents in the market, which are a mixture of home remedies and modern technology. You can use any of these and keep the squirrels away from digging and chewing.

Controlling squirrels can be a tough task, but if you are careful in little things, like not littering any food particles and having a good fencing around your garden, then you can get rid of squirrels.
