How to Control Unemployment

Job loss can trigger financial pressures and emotional distress and gives the sense of powerlessness. For avoiding such situation, you will have to learn how to control unemployment. Unemployment is forced by unrelenting fate and does no good to anyone personally. Somehow everyone gets the feeling that they have no control over the future, situation or our lives.

Everyone is trying to make their way through resentment, anger, depression and fear, which is very common for most of the unemployed people. his article will help you in giving a positive outlook and will help in reclaiming your confidence and reasserting personal control.

Daily Routine

  • You no longer have the set program to work where you have to mold the day and take time out for leisure activities. In very short amount of time, everyone starts drifting. Days are so hectic that sometimes you do not realize what day of the week is it. The line between relaxation and work starts blurring. You do not work hard looking for the job and so you start feeling guilty, which will eventually spoil your leisure time as well. Nothing has to be done, so you tend to put off the work until tomorrow.
  • You will have to take back control by designing, and maintaining your own schedule. Try getting up at the same time in the morning, shower and get ready like you did when you were going to work. Start mapping out your job hunting activities and make sure that you stick to the routine. Keep some time for relaxation and stick to those routines as well. If you have a regular routine, and a defined purpose will help you in continuing to think of yourself as employed and a productive individual.

Physical Shape

  • We tend to eat when we are anxious, depressed or upset. These situations never arise in front of a working person. If you have nothing to do, nothing to dress up for, if you have impaired your respect, then your weight will start ballooning out of control. You will have to fight back to stick to your regimen of eating healthy food regularly. Since, your life has been out of control due to unemployment, you will feel good when you have solo command over something.
  • Cherish every opportunity by eating sparingly, reduce the amount of time you spend in the kitchen and look for some non-edible outlets for letting your stress out. Meanwhile, you must start an exercise routine; it may not be something that you like to do. However, all the workout and huffing will temporarily banish all your worries.

Personal Relations

  • During this time, you will not feel like socializing. You will be tensed and at the edge that you tend to take your anger out on your close people, like your friends and family. Make effort for compartmentalizing your life between your career strains and your friends and family.
  • If you are spilling your frustrations from one person to another, then you are simply poisoning your best source for getting support when needed. This will lead to personal clashes, violence or even divorce with your spouse. It will cause more self-destructiveness and you will start feeling lonely.

Job Search

  • Always remember that you have no control over getting a call for an interview or get the right job offer. What you can control is where you spend all the valuable energy. Keep in mind that, submitting resumes for jobs mentioned in the classifieds or applying is just a minor part of job hunt. For every position that is listed in the newspaper or website, there will be hundreds of applicants. Now, you do the math and you will know that it is like buying a lottery ticket, which is easy and fun but will rarely change your future.
  • You will have to spend your time more wisely, start networking with everyone that you know. Keep calling employers in the industry to check about the current openings, which are not yet publicized. You will have to be proactive, refuse to sit passively next to the phone and waiting for a call, which will never come.
  • You will get exhausted by the end of the day and even more frustrated if you do not get negative reactions. However, you will still have the feeling of self-satisfaction that you have taken your fate in your hands and are not like those people who simply watch and wait.  

Community Activities

  • Due to unemployment, you can get inactive at the local events or you can get deeply committed to your community. In either situation, this is the right time to get connected with certain amount to social activity. Since you will be looking for a job for only a certain amount of time during the week, use the extra time to get connected with people
  • You have complete control over time and you are the only one who can decide where and how you want to spend your time. The new world of unemployment can be prolonged and it will be emotionally debilitating. If you are able to reassert control over some of the aspects of your life, you can easily control the damage inflicted on your psyche and get ready to face the future proudly. It is known that recognizing a job loss is the most regrettable loss of life, but always remember that it is not a personal failure.

Facing unemployment can be a tragic thing, but you can control it by being positive and getting ready to face better job options.
