How to Do a Survey

A survey is conducted to gather “quantitative information” about the objects in a population. The surveys of “foundations” and “human populations” are very general in government and political polling, marketing research and social science. The purpose of a survey is to focus on factual information or opinion, and it involves administering questions to individuals. The question of survey which is directed by a researcher is termed as “researcher-administrated survey” or “structured interview”. The question directed by respondent is called as a “self-administered survey” or a “questionnaire”. The survey queries are generally distinguished between standardized and structured. The “Structured survey” means, the queries should be prepared in a way, that they do not manipulate the response to subsequent questions. The standardized surveys are to guarantee the validity, dependability, and generalizability of the object. The “organizational development” survey is another type of survey which is build carefully as the basis for collecting data, consequent action planning, and organizational analysis.

  • Paper

  • Survey topic

  • Copy machine

Instructions:

  • Before making questions for you survey, think for the topic, information you want to gain from the survey. Keep in mind the objectives you are trying to learn from your survey. For example if you are conducting a survey on eating habits of children from fifth grade, then select an appropriate topic for this survey. Your question for this survey should be, do you eat your breakfast? What you take for in you breakfast? What is your favorite food?

  • Make a note of your questions, and ask your survey participants to fill them. If it is feasible and proficient to survey everyone who the survey relates to, then do it.

  • Provide a method for the contestants to return the survey to you. You can hire someone to monitor during your survey, and you can collect it afterwards. You can also give them your email id or your address stamped on envelope for participant to return your survey.

  • Record and tally the results to every question of survey. If you have multiple choice questions, then check out how many people have answers each choice. If the questions are “fill-in the blank” then you could tally answers each contestant gave.

  • Check out the survey results carefully for patterns and trends. See what conclusion you can draw from the results of survey. Write the conclusion, and you can even include the graphs and table, which can help you to present your survey results.
