Bicycle kick is also known as overhead kick, chalaca, bicicleta or chilena. Bicycle kick is a move in football it is done by throwing your body up in the air, making a strong movement with legs in order to get one leg high to reach for the ball, and then it is kicked backwards. A bicycle kick is used in various other sports like Sepak Takraw a famous sport of Malaysia and Thailand. It is also seen in Australian football where it is known as snap kick.

The famous Brazilian football player Pele describes bicycle kick as “not easy to do”. The name bicycle kick is derived from, the position of the legs they look like they are pedaling a cycle, which has one leg in the front and the other leg behind. The German’s call it Fallrukzieher, which means a falling backward kick and in Norway, it is known as Brassepark a Brazilian kick.

Bicycle kick is used for only two types of situation:

  • When the player in the team wants to take the ball away from his side goal, but he is standing facing towards the goal. His back to that direction where he wants to kick the ball, since the ball is bouncing it becomes difficult to control.
  • If the striker has his back facing towards the opponent’s goal, if the striker is standing near the penalty area, and if the ball is bouncing to the height of his head, bicycle kick is used.

The most important thing to remember when performing a bicycle kick is, always keep your hands ready for a quick landing on the ground. The difficulty of this kick is unexpected hence players run the maximum risk of hurting themselves or the other players. According to BBC sport, this is one of the most athletic moves and it makes the game richer.

The invention of this is claimed by many countries, all of them have a proposal on how this kick was invented. However, the players are the true inventors of this kick they tend to use it a lot in international or national football tournaments.

Here are a few easy steps on how to do a bicycle kick.

Steps:

  • Always keep your back towards the target and your focus on the ball.
  • Now get the non-kicking legs knee to your chest, do it simultaneously with the kicking leg. This movement of your legs will look like you are pedaling a cycle backwards.
  • Now take the kicking leg to hit the ball, when you are in the air and fall backwards. Now with the non-kicking leg pedal downwards and make a kick right through the ball.
  • While kicking pull your toes behind, so that your ankle makes a right angle. Now extend both your arms and the palms facing the ground to support yourself.
  • To make sure that you do not it your head on the ground when you fall, watch closely to the knee of your kicking leg.

Tips:

  • Do not try to compare yourself to the famous football player Pele. It will take a lot of time for you to learn the bicycle kick.
  • To increase the force of your kick, you must increase the pedaling motion’s speed. You need to have a proper coordination to get this kick right. So, do not get discouraged if you do not get it right.
  • Initially practice this kick on a soft mattress you will be able to understand the entire technique properly without getting hurt.
