How to Do Gymnastics

Gymnastic is a physical exercise, which requires lot of flexibility, strength, coordination, agility, grace and balance. The Federation International de Gymnastique (FIG) governs the most artistic form of gymnastics, Artistic Gymnastics. This form of gymnastics is for women’s and has uneven parallel bars, floor exercises, vault and balance beam. As for the men’s gymnastics has floor exercise, still rings, high bar, vault, parallel bars and pommel horse. It is believed that ancient Greeks invented gymnastics, which included skills like mounting and dismounting a horse, and some skills from the circus.

  • Rhythmic Gymnastics: In this form of gymnastics only women can take part, although a men’s style of rhythmic gymnastic is being found by Japan. This form requires to have five different routines with five various equipments like ribbon, hoop, rope, ball and clubs.
  • Trampolining: It is also known tumbling it has four events such as synchronized, individual, power tumbling and double mini. Trampoline has been included in the Olympic Games since 2000. This form of gymnastics requires an individual to jump constantly to go to a certain height, with ten leaps, without pausing and performing aerial gymnastics.
  • Aerobic: It has performances by individuals in a pair, trios, groups (6 people). It requires having strength, fitness, balance and flexibility. The routine of the aerobic lasts for 60-90 seconds depending on the age of the individual.
  • Acrobatic: It is also known as Acro sports, this from of gymnastic is suitable for men and women. There performance is in a group of two or three. They perform with the heads, feet and hands of their partners. They can also choose their own music for performance.

Some forms of gymnastics can also include children even three years old can perform kindergym. Gymnastics is considered as the most difficult and physically tiring exercise. Here are a few easy steps, which will help you learn how to do gymnastics.

  • Bar grips
  • Athletic tape
  • Free weights (if required)
  • Patience
  • Balance
  • Chalk for doing bars
  • Arm strength
  • A dance belt ( only for men)
  • Leotard
  • Hand eye coordination

  • Gymnastics is one such sport, which will require a lot of flexibility, strength and physical attention. If you have to become a gymnast, you have to get rid of all the fear.
  • Find a gym in your locality. Enquire if they have classes for gymnastics. Also, ask them if they take part in competitions, for how many hours do the class goes on, what is the fees, and how many people are members for gymnastics.
  • To begin with, try simple things like try walking on a balance beam or do a forward roll. Always ask your instructors to let you know if you are going wrong.
  • You should try to increase your arm and muscle strength also flexibility. Ask your gym instructors for some tips to gain muscle strength, or you can also do push-ups, pull-ups and some stretches. Try doing splits to increase your flexibility.
  • Practice the two most basic moves of gymnastics handstand and cartwheel.
  • If you want to become a professional in this sport, you will have to work hard. The key to succeed in this game is to be disciplined. It requires time for your body to learn and get used to the moves, so keep practicing until you get it right.
  • Listen and follow your coach’s advice. Always keep in mind that your coach is there to help you throughout the learning process, so do not hesitate to ask for his help.
  • Never give up, always remember nobody is perfect, everyone makes a mistake. So do not get frustrated keep on trying.
  • Speak up if your facing some problems, while learning a particular step. Make sure you know the techniques of gymnastics you do not want to hurt yourself.
  • For specific training, women’s can take yoga or ballet classes to increase their flexibility and balance. For men’s, you should take weight training classes, it will help you in increasing your strength.
  • Keep your focus on giving your best. Try to compete with yourself and you will see the changes. It is not necessary for you to do artistic gymnastic, you can always go for rhythmic gymnastics, it is a lot easier and you will enjoy doing it.
  • Just because you cannot do splits, do not give up. Always remember practice makes a man perfect!
