Bird’s wings are also known as flight and it is used as the main form for locomotion. It is mostly used by all the species of bird. This flight mode lets the bird feed, breed and avoid the predators. Birds use their wings to catch a prey, to travel on the feeding grounds and for migrating according to different seasons. Few species use it for displaying the season of breeding, in order to reach a safe zone for building their nest. All the large birds use wings for gliding and soaring for the maximum time. The birds have evolved over time and hence, the flight of birds has become more efficient. Birds, which have settled in the oceanic islands, have no access to the ground based predators and hence, they cannot fly. Birds are very beautiful creatures and drawing various characteristics of birds is an art. Drawing the wings of birds in not difficult if you know the basics of drawing. Here are some simple and easy steps on how to draw bird wings.

Things Required:
- Ebony pencil
- Kneaded eraser
- Sketch book or drawing paper
- Workable matte fixative
Steps:
- Take a picture for reference, since you might need some exact details to draw the picture. If you are drawing birds like albatross or seagulls then they have narrow and long wings. Sparrows will have small but broad wings; eagles have a broad set of wings. Whereas birds like ostrich will have wings for balancing and display purpose. You will have to decide on the kind of wings you want, according to the bird’s effect. The wing is a kind of adapted arm. Always make sure that you have drawn all the basic joints in the bird’s wings. The outline of the wing will make it easy to recognize and it will look natural.
- You can practice making the silhouettes of the wings. If you have a pet bird, who is friendly, then just spread out its wings to check how all the joints are attached and examine the features carefully. Don’t force your pet to do this, let go off your bird if it starts struggling.
- If you are looking at a diagram with the bones of the bird visible, then it is very easy to see the wrist, which is well fused with the fingers and bones. The thumb usually has a new feather, which comes off and will only move independently. This individual thumb will help in adjusting the shape of the wing while maneuvering. In animals like chicken, you will see a little nub, which is on the thumb and leads. You will have to draw two coverts of and multiple bands on both the sides of the wings. The coverts should be on both the sides of the wings.
- The bird’s wings are almost in the shape of a teardrop, and have a slight curve on the wrist towards the outside. While drawing, always remember that you have to just make loose curves with swift lines. Make small curves for the body and belly of the bird.
- If you are planning to paint a bird while flying, then you will have to look for a picture, which shows the wings completely spread. You should know the basic markings on the wings. Look for a photo with a pose in which you would want to draw the picture. Lighten the unwanted dark areas with the help of an eraser. Use dome matte fixatives on the pencil drawings, this will avoid all the smudges.
