Koala is a native animal of Australia and mainly belongs to the coastal region. Koala is very similar to the wombat, which is its closet relative alive. However, wombat has a thicker coat, large ears and longer limbs compared to koala. The Koala’s have sharp and large claws, which helps them in climbing trees easily. Koala is also one of those few rare mammals, who have fingerprints, and they are very similar to the fingerprints of human beings. Some scientists claim that it is very difficult to distinguish between human and Koala fingerprints. One can find Koala living only on eucalyptus trees and leaves. Only Koala’s have the capacity to digest the eucalyptus leaves, since they are harmful to most of the species. Koalas are said to have the slowest metabolic rate and take rest for at least 16 hours a day. They sleep for the most time of the day, and spend nearly five hours eating their food.
Currently, the population of koalas is declining and the Australian government has taken measures to prevent these species from becoming extinct. Now, there are only 80,000 koalas left. Earlier they were hunted largely for their fur, but today the population is declining because of the dog attacks and accidents by traffic. These beautiful Australian mammals are not supposed to be kept as pets, except by the wildlife people. They need to have a special license for keeping koalas, and they have to return this animal to the wild once they are healthy. Koalas are the most harmless and beautiful creatures present today and drawing a picture of koala can be fun. Below are some easy steps that will teach you how to draw a face of koala.

Things Required:
- Sketch pad
- Drawing pencils
- Colored pencils
Steps:
- Start by making circle to draw a basic shape, which will be similar to the head of the koala. Then start making two half-small circles that will be placed on the top portion of the head, and a little away from each other. These semi circles will act as the ears of your koala.
- To give an effect that shows the depth of the features, use some color pencils. You can use pencils like black, grey or white to give a realistic look to the ears. Now, take the black pencil and use it to give a nice leathery look to the ear, and use the remaining pencils to make fur. Make some large and small strokes for the fur.
- On the center part of the face, draw a small rectangle with curved corners for the nose. To make the nostrils for koala, draw an upside-down moon shaped curve inside the rectangle.
- Use a black pencil to color the nose of the koala, and use a light pink pencil for coloring the nostrils. On the outer edge of the nose, place the eyes of the koala. The top portion of the eyes and nose should be in one line. Take a brown pencil and make two small circles for the eyes. You will have to make a vertical slit in each eye, so use a black pencil for the same.
- Take a black pencil and start making the mouth of koala, make a small curve just beneath the nose. Start visualizing a straight line that goes through the inner edges of the eyes. Make sure that the ends of the mouth don’t go beyond the visual line. Make a ‘U’ shape right under the mouth and color this entire portion with a pink colored pencil. To give a furry look to the mouth, use a white pencil and draw a straight line just around the pink portion.
- Give the finishing touch to the face of the koala. Use pencils of white, black or grey color, since they help in giving a realistic look. Koalas have straight fur, so make sure that you make straight strokes with the pencil. The face of the koala should be filled in lightly with the fur; fill the areas like, ears, nose, mouth and eyes with thick fur.
