Learning how to earn trust can be a little tricky, because trust is something, which is easy to lose but very difficult to gain. If you happen to lose that trust, then it will take more than an apology to get that trust back. The condition of trusting someone is personal and it is not always based on rational assessment when someone trusts other person.
Not everyone behaves in the same manner. Some people believe in gaining trust and they simply take it back when people fail to live up to their standards.
Here are some simple steps on how to earn trust

- Be on time
You must remember that if you are late consistently then it will send a clear and loud message, not only about your reliability, but also about your lack of commitment towards other people waiting for you. If there is a similar pattern of people showing up late, then this does not mean that you have to do the same. Coming in late consistently in an organization will lead to costly consequences, so never take undue advantage of an organization.
- Prepare
People usually tend to use the excuse that they have to go for meetings or have back to back meetings as a reason for coming in late and for not preparing adequately as well. Always remember that, “Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.” It will waste the time of other people as well, along with yours. If you happen to waste the time of other people, then you must not expect them to trust you with anything.
- Never gossip
If you are having problems with someone, then you will have to work it out with them. If you are under the guise of venting then the gossips keep on increasing. When you start venting, it means that you want to work things out with the other person with whom you are facing problem. Venting is one of the most difficult things and people usually hate going through those tough conversations. Gossiping is simply venting without having to face that person.
- Keep confidential things confidential
If you know something that others are not supposed to know, then it is a big responsibility on you. Sometimes it can be a little intoxicating, you must never even mention things like these in front of other people. You will feel like you have lot of power, but remind yourself if it is worth taking the risk on your reputation or on others.
- Always honor your promises
You must always keep your promise, because if you don’t then people won’t trust you. It means that either you keep your promise or inform people in advance that you will not be able to keep the promise. When you inform the other person in advance that you won’t be able to do things as promised, then it will give you some time to deal with the potential breakdown. This will not count as keeping your promise, but it will count as your commitment towards the relationship.
- Admit when you have no information on something
Never give that illusion to people that you know something, even when you have no idea on that particular topic. Stop giving the perception to people that you are competent in everything. The actual reality is that the more competent we get, we become more aware that we don’t know anything and this will make you confident about finding information on that subject.
- Always own your mistakes
If you start admitting your mistakes then it proves as a good start because it will demonstrate that you are honest. If something goes wrong then you must take full responsibility, deal with the consequences of your mistake, and try to learn from every mistake of yours.
Continue all the things mentioned above and soon many people will find you trustworthy.
