Pregnancy is the most important stage in a women’s life. A new life is taking birth inside the mother’s womb. Hence, it is very important to ensure that the pregnant woman is aware of what and how to eat when pregnant. What a woman eats throughout her pregnancy really does matter. The reason for this is, it not only provides nutrition to the baby, but also helps to maintain the increased metabolism of the mother.
Here are some correct ways of eating when pregnant:
- What is most important is extra calorie intake. The woman needs to take in extra calorie to meet the requirement of the baby and herself. A pregnant woman needs around 50% more of vitamins, minerals and protein during pregnancy in comparison to other normal days. This additional calorie intake should be sufficient to attain a weight gain of approximately 22 to 28 pounds in women of normal weight. If the mother is healthy, so will the baby be. Its the diet pattern and methods of eating when pregnant, which decide the health of both the mother and the child.
- Fruits and vegetables are a rich source of fibers and minerals. Fruits and vegetables rich in Vitamin C help in developing the tissues of both the mother and the baby. Some of the fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C are strawberries, melons, oranges, papaya, tomatoes, peppers, greens, cabbage, and broccoli.
- Vitamins are an integral part of the diet pattern as far as eating when pregnant is concerned. While the pregnant woman needs to increase the intake of Vitamin C, simultaneously she should also be careful with the intake of Vitamin A.
- It has been proved that too much intake of Vitamin A is harmful for the unborn child. Because of the changes in the nervous system during pregnancy, the need for folic acid increases. The folic acid helps to maintain the right nervous system thereby reducing the risk of any defect in the child.
- The easiest way to get the folic acid is by taking a multivitamin. Most of the multivitamins, which are available in the market, contain enough folic acid.
- Along with Vitamins, the need for Calcium is equally important during pregnancy. It is necessary to eat food, which is rich in calcium so as to make the child’s bones and teeth healthy. All the dairy products like milk, yogurt, cheese and many other such items provide high amount of calcium. Snacks such as almonds, baked good made with soy flour and dried apricots and figs contain calcium.

Following food items cause problems during pregnancy. Intake of these edibles can lead to improper health of the mother or the baby.
- While certain extra intake of food is required during pregnancy, reduction and avoidance of certain variety of food is also equally important. Alcohol is one such thing. Avoiding the intake of alcohol is very much necessary. Consumption of alcohol can lead to premature delivery, birth defects and low birth weight in the baby.
- Listeria bacteria are also very harmful for the expecting mothers and can even lead to miscarriage. This kind of bacteria is present in raw meat and fish.
- A pregnant woman should avoid fishes like shark, swordfish and marlin. This is because of the high level of mercury present in these fishes. High mercury can harm the nervous system of the baby.
- You must also reduce the intake of coffee, which contains caffeine, when pregnant. Chocolates are also a rich source of caffeine. So the woman should limit the use of caffeine and chocolates. Caffeine is a diuretic and can rob your body of valuable water. Caffeine can also cause irritation, insomnia and low birth weight in the baby.
- Intestine bacteria called Salmonella is found in the pigs and poultry. In order to eat these dishes, it is necessary to maintain proper hygiene while cooking. These bacteria can cause lot of harm to the woman and her baby.
Along with a proper diet, the woman also needs to maintain the speed and time of taking the food. All the food should be taken normally and with proper care and attention.
