For keeping a proper check on all the computer and user accounts, a feature dubbed as group policy is used. This is a Microsoft feature developed to control the user and computer accounts. You can change the configurations of the computer for a particular user account. This is possible because of the “Group Policy Microsoft Management Console” snap-ins. This is also known as MMC. All the settings of the Group Policy are available in Objects of Group Policy. The GPO is linked with different domains and websites.
Group Policy is helpful for the user in many different ways. Group policy is widely used for users and computer accounts and the account settings.
Following are some of the uses of group policy:
Security
You can use different security options for your network, domain or the local computer. You can keep your computer secured by using all these options.
Folder Redirection
This option helps in redirecting the special folder of the user to the network.
Software Installation and Maintenance
Group Policy is helpful for installation of new software. You can also maintain all the previous software installed in the computer.
Script
You will find different computer scripts in the used by the computer for log in and log off purpose and starting and shut down of computer.
Group Policy Tools are usually used for editing a group policy in your computer. This tool proves to be the best help for the editing process. This editing tool is available for all computers having Windows XP operating system. The process of editing the group policy is not tough. You only need to find the best group policy editor.
The process of editing group policy by using group policy editor is as follows;
- Log off from your current user account and again log in to your computer using the account having administrator privileges. This is necessary so as to edit the group policy.
- Then click on the “Start” menu and go to “Run” tab.
- In the “Run” window type MMC or Microsoft Management Console.
- A blank window will appear on the screen. You need to add the components of the group policy editor to the MMC by clicking on the “File” menu.
- In the “File” menu you will find “Add/Remove” button. Click on the “Add” tab.
- A window with “Available Stand-alone Snap-ins” menu will appear. Here you need to find snap-ins of group policy on the screen and then go to the “Add” tab and click it.
- A list of all the computer group policy objects will appear on the screen. You need to select whichever group policy object you want to edit. You can easily access the objects and edit them using the group policy editor.
- Click on the “Finish” tab once you have finished the editing process.
When you open the Group Policy Editor, you will find two sections, viz. User Configuration and Computer Configuration. In User Configuration, you will find all the details about all the policies and settings that are applicable for users. These policies or settings are related to user accounts in your computer. In Computer configuration section, you will find all the settings related to the different computer accounts. These settings are regarding the log on and log off in your computer. In both of these branches, you will see common sub-items, which are windows settings, administrative templates and software settings.
You will also find some other editors on internet. However, the most commonly used is the Group Policy editor as this is a part of the software. However, you can use these different editing applications by downloading them from internet. You may find these applications free of cost or may need to spend some money. These applications have high configuration editing tools and settings so that you can make your computer more secured.
