  • If you have Windows XP as your operating system, insert the CD of the operating system in your computer in the driver.
  • When the CD runs, type “d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons” in the open box. This code is only for Windows XP users. If you have the Professional x64 edition of XP, instead of “i386″ type “amd64″.
  • You will see the Windows Setup Dialog Box on the page. In this dialog box, there will be a recovery console option. Select that and click YES. This will install the recovery console on your computer.
  • After installing, restart the computer so that the settings are saved. You will see the Recovery Console option next time in the startup menu when you turn on your computer.

Once you have installed the Recovery Console, you can edit registry in Recovery Console easily. Before editing registry, it is advisable to make a proper backup of all the files in the registry. Save all the keys and sub keys in the registry in the backup. If any of your modification goes wrong, then backup helps you to reload the default settings of your computer. For making a backup of all your files, go to Run and type REGEDIT. When the registry page opens, go to “Export” by clicking on the “File” menu. You will open the backup window for the computer registry. Then only type the names of all those files which you want to maintain a backup and save the registry in the location you want to.

Before you start editing registry in recovery console, it is necessary to reboot the registry. It is very easy to boot in the Recovery Console. To reboot the recovery mode, following instructions will be helpful;

  • For booting the recovery console, you will need a Windows CD. Insert the CD into the driver and reboot your computer.
  • You will see the welcome setup on the screen. Press “R” button to reboot.
  • You will be asked for a password. Enter the administrator password, if any.
  • After hitting Enter, the system will reboot.

Now after rebooting the recovery console, you can start your computer in recovery mode if you have a problem in starting your computer. Once the computer has started, you can easily make necessary changes in the registry in recovery console and start your computer in normal mode. To edit registry in recovery console, following steps should be followed;

  • When you type “Reg/?” you will see a list of all the query commands on the screen. You will have to learn the syntax of the registry to give any command in the registry. These will be simple commands such as Delete, Copy, Save.
  • You can use these simple commands to edit the registry keys and their values.
  • When you have finished editing registry in recovery console, type Exit and hit “Enter” tab.
