How to Edit Registry in Vista

If you have Vista OS and your computer is not working properly, you may have to edit registry in Vista. Registry is an overall review of the computer hardware. By going to the registry, you will find all the information regarding the hardware fitted to your computer. You can also get information for the memory set up of the computer and the system options which are selected for operating the computer.

Editing registry in your computer is a risky and a tedious job. There are many hassles involved in registry related to the operating system. If you have Vista as your operating system, you can edit registry in vista using REGEDIT option. In Vista, the process of modifying the registry keys or adding extra keys is known as ‘tweaking or hacking the registry’. How to Edit Registry in Vista
The process of editing registry in vista is easy, especially if you are computer savvy. But see to it that you have a proper backup of all the Keys from your registry. Backup helps to restore the original or default setup of your computer. Once you have properly taken the backup of all the registry files, you can start editing the registry.

Here are some steps that will show you how to edit registry in vista;

  • Click on the Start menu on the left hand corner.
  • Go to the Run option, type REGEDIT in the space provided and click OK. This will open the REGEDIT, your registry editor in the computer. This editor is used to edit registry in Vista. You will see a list of keys on the left hand side of the editor page.
  • Select the exact key, which you want to edit from that list. As there are many different keys and sub keys on this editor page, it is hard to find any particular key. But, if you know which is to be deleted then you can properly navigate and find the exact file which is to be edited. You can use a shortcut by pressing Cltr + F button to find the particular key. Then you can easily change the value of the sub key there and then. However, to edit the key, you will need the exact value of the key, which is to be modified.

If you want to make some changes in registry, you can directly go to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER key. You will see many sub keys below the main key. Go to Control Panel and select Desktop and Windows Metrics options. You will see key names and different values in the middle of your page. Over here, go to “IconTitleWrap” value.

You can change the value to 0 or 1 by clicking on the key. Once you have made the necessary changes in Vista registry, you may be asked to restart your computer. It is better to restart your computer immediately so that the changes are saved by your computer.

While making any changes in the Vista registry, see to it that proper care is taken. Take necessary precautions to edit registry in vista because if you fail to do so, your computer or OS may crash down and you will again need to upload everything from beginning.
