How to Edit Start Menu

When you turn on the computer, you see all the icons on the desktop and at the right hand corner, “START” button is there. This start button gives you access to all the files in your computer. When you first open the start menu, you will see files such as program, documents, settings, search, run etc. You also see all the programs and applications you have installed on your computer. You can modify the programs in your start up menu and change its appearance. This article will show how to edit start menu through very simple steps.

The startup menu of the computer is a compilation of all the information regarding software, hardware and all files and folders in your computer. For every operating system, the format of the startup menu is fixed. You can give it a new look and change the content of the startup menu.

Here are some steps that will show you how to edit start menu:

If you want to create a new menu in the startup menu then,

  • Go to the Start Menu by going to the settings section of the startup menu.
  • When you go to the Start Menu Programs, you will see ‘Advanced’ tab.
  • In this ‘Advanced’ window, you need to select the menu on which the new menu will appear.
  • Go to the File menu and select New tab.
  • You will need to type a name for the new folder. Hit the ENTER button and you have created a new menu.

When you want to add or remove a program from the startup menu, the following process will help you;

  • Select the Settings tab in the startup menu and then go to the Taskbar and click on Start Menu.
  • In the Start Menu Programs, you will find tabs to add or remove a program from the startup menu. Click Add if you need to insert more menus.
  • For adding more programs in the start menu, when you click the Add tab, go to Browse and select all the programs which you need to add. After you have selected these programs, select the menu where you want to add these programs.
  • You can change the file name if you want. You can also change the icons of the programs in the start menu. After you have done all the changes click on the Finish tab.
  • For removing or deleting programs from the startup menu, select Remove button after locating the programs, which you want to delete. You can delete the shortcut in the startup menu but if you want to delete the file permanently, you need to locate the file and then delete it permanently.

However, the changes you make in the startup menu depend upon the operating system which you are using. Every operating system has different methods of editing the startup menu. If you have any other operating system such as Windows Vista or XP Professional, the method of editing the startup menu will be different. The process to edit the startup menu in Windows XP Professional is as follows;

  • Add Programs
    1. Go to the “Programs” folder by right-clicking on the Start button on the desktop and then click Explore.
    2. When you open the Programs folder, select the program which you want to add. To add, right click on the program and select “Copy”.
    3. Paste all the selected programs in the Startup folder in the Program window. The programs will be automatically added in the start menu.
    4. Restart the computer to install and apply all the changes you made.
  • Remove Programs
    1. For removing programs from Windows XP Professional operating system, go to the Run section of the start menu. When the Run window pops up, type “msconfig”. This will open the System Utility Configuration page.
    2. Go to “Startup” button. This will open the window of all the documents and programs in the startup menu of your computer. Here, you can delete any program which you want.
