How to Fix a Furnace

Furnaces are used for various heating purposes. They have been used since long time and the techniques followed for manufacturing have changed drastically. Nowadays we use a variety of furnaces that require different kinds of fuel for burning. On the basis of the fuel that is used for burning, furnaces are classified as electric furnace, oil furnace and gas furnace. You will be able to fix any problems related to these furnaces if you know how to fix a furnace.

Fixing an oil furnace

  • The common problems with these types of furnaces is that their burner may not run or sometimes the burner may run but not produce fire. Sometimes these furnaces produce a lot of smoke.
  • If the burner won’t start then initially set the thermostat of the furnace to a little higher temperature and then bring down to the normal temperature to see whether it starts or not.
  • If it still doesn’t start check all the switches, fuses and breakers. Make them tight and press the reset button.
  • Make sure that the ignition of the furnace is getting sufficient amount of fuel so that it burns properly.
  • If this doesn’t help then oil the motor and the blower and adjust them and check whether the furnace functions properly now.
  • If your burner runs but won’t produce fire then there may not be enough amount of oil in the furnace or the oil valves may be closed. To fix this problem either fill the tank with oil or check and open the oil valves.
  • If the burner is producing too much of smoke then shut off the furnace and fill the oil cups with oil. Before filling the oil cups let the furnace cool for some time. This will reduce the amount of smoke produced from the furnace.
  • If the chimney smokes a lot then you need to replace the chimney because it may waste the fuel.
  • Check all the built-in safety controls of the furnace, which help in proper operation of the furnace.
  • If the furnace has any operating problem, then first reset the safety controls and try to light the furnace once again. If the furnace does not start then you need to replace some safety controls that are not functioning properly.
  • If the burner cycles too often then you may have to replace the filter, for which you will have to go to a professional.

Fixing a gas furnace

  • If the furnace is not producing enough amount of heat then possibly the filter or burner is dirty or the blower is clogged or the belt of the blower is loose or broken. To fix this problem raise the thermostat and clean or replace the filter or blower assembly. You may also adjust or replace the belt of the blower. Check whether all the registers are open and clean.
  • Sometimes the furnace won’t run because of no gas, pilot light out, motor overload or switch off. To fix these problems, make sure that the furnace is getting enough amount of gas and relight the pilot light. You can also switch on the power switch and press reset button to restart the furnace.
  • If the pilot of your furnace wont light then check whether the pilot opening is blocked or there is not enough amount of gas in the furnace. Open the gas valve completely.
  • Sometimes the pilot gets turned off repeatedly after some time due to loose thermocouple or faulty pilot. In this case tighten or replace the thermocouple yourself or call a professional.
  • Most of the times the blower runs continuously and won’t stop running. This happens because of wrong setting of blower control or the limit switch. In this case reset the thermostat from ON to AUTO mode and reset the limit switch.
  • If the furnace turns on and off repeatedly then clean the filter and blower and lubricate them with oil.
  • If your burner is producing too much of noise then tighten the access panels, replace the belts which have been damaged and lubricate the oil ports of blower and the motor.

Fixing an electric furnace

  • Make sure that the power switch is turned on and check the reset button and press it. If your furnace still doesn’t start then increase the temperature of thermostat by 5 degrees to see if the furnace turns on.
  • If any of the above processes does not help, then check the electric service panel for blown fuse or tripped breaker.
  • If your electric furnace is not generating enough amount of heat even after raising the thermostat then check the comfort controls and fix them.
  • If the furnace turns on and off repeatedly then clean the filters and blowers or if necessary replace them.
  • If the furnace is making noise then replace the belts. If your furnace is not mounted properly with the belts it may produce noise. In this case either fix the belts tightly or replacing them would be a better option. After replacing the belts lubricate the blower and motor oil ports.
  • In case you are trying to reset the circuit breakers or replacing any damaged fuses or any other major fixes it would be safe to call a technician who is trained in repairing the electric furnace.

If you find it difficult to fix any problems using the tips given in this how to fix a furnace article, you can refer manufacturer’s instructions. However it is safe to call a trained professional to fix any major problems.

I have an old gas furnace, but it has an ignitor. It turns on, works a little while, then stops working. Sometimes only one out of the three, burners light up! Any ideas?
