Leaking pipes is the most common problems of the plumbing system at our house. We will find a leaking pipe at our house mainly near the kitchen sinks, toilets and tubs. Mostly we face this problem because of the poor quality of the pipes and the poor sustainability of the pipes to the water pressure. These leaking problems arising due to poor plumbing and poor quality pipes and can be fixed if you know how to fix a leak through various techniques.
These simple techniques will guide you to fix all types of leaks varying from faucet leaks, bath tub leaks, bathroom leaks, etc
- If you find a leak in your pipe the immediate action you should take is tie a thick cloth in that area and avoid wastage of water. This will also help in fixing the leak temporarily.
Fixing a leak using a pipe patch
- The first thing you need to do when you are trying to fix a leak is examine the leak and turn off the main valve of the water supply. While examining the leak you will come to know the severity of leak.
- Now, drain the water from the pipes such that the pipe does not contain any water inside and clean the pipe using a cloth.
- You can use the patching technique to fix the leak. In patching technique you need to use the pipe patch available readily in the hardware stores. This pipe patch consists of a rubber patch and a C-shaped clamp that helps in holding the rubber firmly with the pipe.
- Get a pipe patch from the hardware stores. These rubber patches are available in various sizes. Select a patch examining the leak in your pipe.
- Placing this rubber pad on the leaking area helps in covering the hole completely. Using the C-shaped clamp you can hold this rubber pad tightly and then tighten it by the screws available.
- You can also prepare this pipe patch at home. For this you need to get piece of heavy rubber and a piece of C-Shaped metal piece and few screws. This home-made patch will be similar to the ready-made patch available in the market.
Fixing a leak using electric tape
- The other way you can try to fix a leak is using an electrical tape. Initially close the main valve of water and wrap a thick layer of electrical tape on the leak.
- This electrical tape is suitable to fix small leaks and is not durable for many days; you need to change the tape frequently.
- Allow the pipe to dry completely before starting to use it.
Fixing a leak using epoxy
- You will also get epoxy putty in the hardware store to fix the leaks. You will have to mix the correct proportion of epoxy with water. The directions for this will be mentioned on the box.
- Close the main water valve and allow it to dry. It is very essential that the pipe is completely dried before applying epoxy or else it will not help in blocking the leak properly.
- When you are done with the mixing process, apply this to the leaking area and allow the epoxy to dry completely for three to four days. When you feel that the epoxy has dried completely, start using the pipe line once again.
Fixing a leak by replacing/cutting the pipe
- If you are trained and confident then you can try the option of replacing the entire pipe or the leaking portion of the pipe. This replacing is not as easy as it sounds.
- This replacing technique is mostly practiced with PVC or PB pipes and not with copper or other metal pipes. Also if the leak is major and cannot be repaired by any of the above processes, you have to go for replacing.
- Cut the pipe with a pipe cutter in the area where it is leaking. You can insert a compression ring or a pipe fitting in the cut area.
- If you are trying to replace the entire pipe then buy a good quality pipe and remove the old one to replace it with the new pipe.
Follow any of these above techniques and fix leaks in pipes on your own.
