How to Fix a Slice

How to fix a slice is probably one of the most sought-after pieces of advice among golfers. A slice is a left-to-right trajectory of a golf ball that is a result of a significant tilt in the spin-axis of the golf ball towards the right side, or in the clockwise direction. For left-handers the slice is on the opposite side. There are many ways in which you can fix a slice and this article will explain some of them.

Open address position

  • The most common cause of a slice is an open address position.
  • Do not try to fix your slice by aiming your body to the left as doing this will land you in deeper trouble.
  • When you try to hit the ball straight, make sure that you set up correctly and your shoulders, hip and feet are square to the target line.
  • When you address the golf ball, imagine that there is another ball kept three or four inches in front of the actual ball.
  • As you bring the golf club down, strike the actual ball while keeping your club travelling along the path to the ball you have imagined.

Use of clubs to perfect alignment

  • Set down your golf clubs on the driving range to make sure that you have a proper alignment.
  • If you are right-handed, make sure that your feet forma parallel line, pointing marginally towards the left side of your target

Grip

  • If you have a weak grip, it means that the grip is turned more counter-clockwise and will cause the club face to open when the club comes in contact with the ball.
  • Turn your grip to the right; lefties will have to turn their grip to left. This will give you a stronger grip and fix the slicing problem.

Control your shoulders

  • Another common problem with golfers is that they rotate their right shoulder too early.
  • During the backswing, the left shoulder should be in front of the right one. You should also make sure that the right shoulder does not rotate in front of the left one till you actually make contact with the golf ball.

Follow through at target

  • Focus on the following through at the target to make sure that the swing plane does not cut across or come inside out.
  • If you have a square club face, and you are following through at your target, you will have a minimal side spin. The follow through will also be higher than normal.

Control the tempo

  • Don’t try to hit the ball hard when you come over the top. Just relax and let your body turn generate the speed.
  • If you put a lot of force in your swing, it will result in your shoulders coming out in front and lead to slicing.
  • Make sure that you swing smoothly; even if it does not have power, it will feel effortless.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don’t reach out for the golf ball, as it will result in slicing. Let your hands hang down naturally.
  • Always remember to stand straight, bend your knees slightly and keep your feet shoulder width apart.
  • Line up your ball with the front ball and tip the face of the golf club in.
  • Keep your eye on the ball all the time and loosen your grip.
  • Making these changes in your golfing style will be uncomfortable at first. It will take some time and a lot of practice to fix a slice.
