A subwoofer is a loudspeaker that comes along with a stereo system. It pushes low-pitched frequencies and adds theatre-like sound to the stereo system. There are many problems associated with their functioning such as a hole in the woofer, a blown subwoofer, or no sound coming from it. It will be very helpful if you know how to fix a subwoofer because then you can fix these problems on your own.
Let us look at each of these problems one by one and then see how to fix them individually.
Fix a subwoofer
- The first thing to do will be to check the manufacturer’s website. If the problem is a burned out voice coil, you will have to send it for repairing to the manufacturer. You will have to decide whether it is worth spending money to repair it or just buy a new one.
- If you notice that the bronze colored coil under the foam cover is burned or distorted, then it will have to be replaced.
- You can also check if the problem is with the fuse. If the fuse shows a short or is discolored you will need to replace it to fix the problem.
- You can also go online on Tech Support forums and find out if other users had similar problems and what methods they applied to fix their problems.

Fix a hole in subwoofer
If the speaker of your subwoofer is torn or there is a hole in it, then you will hear a muddled sound every time you play something on it. You can fix this problem easily using some readily available items in your house such as water, glue, bowl and tissue paper. Follow the steps mentioned below:
- The first thing to do is to remove the casing of the speaker and locate the exact place of the hole.
- Take 10 pieces of tissue paper and cut them half an inch bigger than the hole. You can use tissue paper that is available in hobby or craft shops.
- Take some Elmer’s glue and pour some of it in a bowl. Add water to the glue till it is diluted to a soup-like consistency.
- Put the cut pieces of tissue in this water-glue mixture and stick them on the hole one by one.
- Make sure that you let the first tissue dry completely before sticking the next one.
- Now, place the speaker in an area that is well ventilated and leave it to dry for at least 24 hours. Once it has dried, reassemble the subwoofer and the problem is fixed.
Fix a blown subwoofer
Sometimes your subwoofer might get blown as a result of receiving more current that it can handle. The speaker will produce buzzing and rattling sounds because the broken speaker will shake in the cavity inside. However, there is no need to worry as this can be easily fixed at home using a subwoofer repair. This kit is readily available in the market. Follow these steps to fix a blown subwoofer:
- When you face a blown subwoofer problem, you will have to replace the speaker. This is because the overflow of current will knock the speaker loose from its casing.
- You will have to first remove the grill that covers the speaker housing.
- Now, pull the cone out of the cavity of the damaged subwoofer; do this process very carefully.
- Once you have taken out the cone, detach the wiring of the speaker.
- Replace the damaged speaker with a new one and attach all the wires in place.
- Then put the cover back on to finish the repair.
- This process is not very difficult to do, especially if you have a good repair kit handy.
Fix a subwoofer with no sound
If there is no sound coming out of your subwoofer, it can be easily repaired using a fuse and a screwdriver. Follow these simple steps:
- First, check the connection between the audio source and the subwoofer. If the connections look fins then check with a different speaker wire.
- Check for a fuse by disassembling the housing of the subwoofer and replace it if necessary. Make sure that the replacement fuse is of the same rating as the original.
- A damaged voice coil may also result in the subwoofer not producing any sound. In this case, you can replace the voice coil. However, it makes more sense to replace the speaker entirely than replacing only the voice coil, because of cost reasons.
