It can be difficult to get rid of your bad breath if you don’t know the root cause of it. In most cases, bad breath is a result of the kind of food you have eaten. However, there are some other reasons such as gum disease, upset stomach and liver that can cause bad breath. Having bad breath will distance you from your family, friends and colleagues. If you are suffering from this problem, it’s high time you started thinking about how to fix bad breath.
The most important thing to practice if you want to fix bad breath is to maintain a proper oral hygiene. The things comprising a proper oral hygiene routine are:
- Brush and floss your teeth after every meal, or at least twice a day to prevent any food particles from getting stuck in the teeth. It is these food particles on which the bacteria feed and cause bad breath.
- If you are a smoker or drink alcohol, make sure that you rinse your mouth with mouthwash after a smoke or a drink to eliminate the bad odor instantly.
- While brushing, ensure that you also clean your tongue. You can use your toothbrush, the back of a spoon or better a tongue cleaner to scrape off the white goo on your tongue.
- You often experience bad breath in the morning. This is the result of a dry mouth; therefore, ensure that you drink lots of water during the day.
- Add a little baking soda to your toothpaste; it helps to eliminate bad odor from food.
If you are outside, having lunch with your colleagues, and have ordered food that is bound to give you a bad breath, here are a few quick-fixes to escape such a situation:
- Drink water and squeeze some lemon in it as it will help cover up the odor.
- Chew some sugar-free gum as it will activate saliva production in your mouth and help wash out the bacteria and stuck food particles.
- When you order, ask for a dish that has ginger, parsley or mint in it. Chew on these herbs to instantly fix your bad breath.
- Excuse yourself to go to the bathroom, and while going there sneak a spoon in with you. Use the spoon to scrape off the white gooey matter, which is a major cause of bad breath, on your tongue.
Here are a few home remedies that you can use to fix bad breath:
- Crisp fruits such as apples, pears and carrots are high in fiber content. Eating them will activate your saliva production and thus eliminate bad breath.
- Spices such as cardamom, fennel seeds and anise are also helpful for fixing bad breath. Chewing on these spices will not only get rid of the odor but also leave a refreshing taste in your mouth.
- Having a bowl sugar-free yogurt twice a day will reduce the hydrogen sulfide levels in your body. Hydrogen sulfide gives that rotten egg smell to your mouth. Topping the yogurt with berries and citrus fruits not only stops bad breath but also tastes good.
- Take some salt from the kitchen and put it in a glass of lukewarm water. Gargling or even rinsing your mouth with this water will instantly take care of the bad breath in your mouth.
If the above tips are not working for you it means that the bad breath is resulting from problems in other parts of your body.
- If you suffer from acidity, you need to always keep some antacids with you. This will help you to fix your bad breath to some extent.
- Sinus is also a cause of bad breath. Keep a decongestant handy for use when you get a sinus attack.
