How to Fix Digital Camera

Fixing a digital camera is not an easy task as the camera contains a lot of tiny, delicate and expensive parts which should be handled carefully. A minor damage to any expensive part of the camera would cost a lot for its repair. Sometimes the cost of repair would be more than the actual cost of the camera. Knowing how to fix digital camera will help you fix your camera yourself without hiring a professional for repair.

The common problems with cameras are with their lens, memory cards/SD cards or the shutter of the camera getting stuck. You can fix these problems at home with a little knowledge and tips which are given here. You can even read the manuals provided with the cameras to fix any minor problems.

Fixing lens of a digital camera

  • If the lens of the camera is damaged it will show an error message in the LCD screen of the camera, but some cameras don’t show an error message and they simply make a beeping noise and shut off.
  • The lens of a camera may get damaged due to the accumulation of sand particles, fibers, etc set in the corners of the lens. Because of this they give a poor quality picture.
  • The easiest method to overcome this problem is blowing air in the gaps around the lens barrel such that the sand particles are blown out. You may also use a hair dryer by setting it in “no heat” mode.
  • Another method to remove these particles is just tap the lens barrel slightly with your hand by holding it in your hand facing the lens downwards.
  • You may also try to clean the corners of the lens with a thin needle or spoon gently. But, while doing this you need to be more careful so that you don’t cause any damage to the lens.

Fixing memory card/SD card/ SDHC card

  • The common problem with the memory card of digital cameras is that it shows “memory card error”. The main reason behind this is that the card may be used initially by unformatting it.
  • An unformatted card can be formatted within the camera only. But this may cause loss of data from the camera. So before using the card for the first time make sure that it is formatted.
  • Sometimes this happens because the card switch is locked (downward position).  Simply unlock the card switch. If the switch is broken then fix it using a cellophane tape.
  • If you still get this error then you will have to open the camera. But before doing this read the instruction manual properly or hire a repairing professional if you are not confident about doing this on your own.
  • Sometimes this error is shown in new cameras because you may be using a different version of card in the camera designed to work with any other version of card. For e.g. a SDHC cards do not work with the cameras designed for SD cards. So before buying a card for your digicams look for its compatibility with the camera.

Fixing a stuck shutter of digital camera

  • The shutter of camera my get stuck because it becomes sticky due to the moisture and dust particles settled in the gaps in it.
  • A stuck shutter may develop blurred or blackish pictures or sometimes they develop bright and overexposed pictures.
  • To fix this error place the camera in continuous shutter mode and take as many pictures as you can so that the shutter gets lubricated and functions properly.
  • You may also try to put the camera in any mode that gives you longest exposure time without flash.
  • Do not try opening a camera in this case as these parts of the camera are stuck deep inside and need a lot of training for opening. Damaging it may cost a lot in repairing if you are not trained to handle it properly.

Another common problem with digital cameras is that the batteries are not working properly. In this case change the batteries or insert high power and suitable batteries. Sometimes the memory card of the camera may get full. You need to change the memory card for this. You may also experience that you have changed the settings of the camera by hitting a wrong button accidently. So check the settings before clicking a photograph. If you want to reset the camera you can do this by removing the batteries for at least 24 hours.
