If you have been using the Nintendo gamecube for a long period of time you will notice there are many scratches and dirt on the game discs. This will cause problems when you try to play games on the gamecube as it makes it difficult for the device’s laser to read the disc. In such a situation it will be very good if you know how to fix gamecube. This article will tell you all that you need to know about fixing gamecube and its games.
Fix disc read error on gamecube
The first thing that you need to confirm is whether the gaming console is under the warranty period or not. If it is then it would be better to send it back to Nintendo for repairing. However, if the warranty has expired then follow these steps:
- Unplug all the wires and power cord from the gamecube; this is for your own safety and will prevent any further damage to the gamecube.
- You will have to purchase the gamecube screwdriver as only this will open the screws on the device. Once you have the tool, unscrew all the four screws and open the gamecube.
- Now, flip over the gamecube and take off the top cover.
- Check if the lens is dirty; most of the time a dirty lens is the cause of the error message. You can clean the lens using rubbing alcohol and Q-tip and rub it gently on the lens.
- Place the cover back in position, plug all the cords and wires in place and test your gamecube. The problem should be fixed. If it is not, then continue to the next step.
- Remove the screws that hold the disc reader and remove the disc from the system very carefully. Flip it over and you will find a little black box at the south-east side of the chip.
- You will find a small screw in the black box; turn it in the clock-wise direction (90 degrees) using a Philips screwdriver. This will fix the disc read error temporarily and you will have to repeat the process when this error occurs again.
- Reassemble you gamecube again and the error should have been fixed and your gamecube will work as new.
Fix the stuck “open door”’ button
Before you start fixing this problem you will have to keep some tools ready. These include a gamecube screwdriver, Philips #1 and #2 screwdrivers, a small cleaning brush and some grease to be applied on the laser assembly. Now follow these steps to fix your problem:
- Use the gamecube screwdriver to unscrew the four screws that you find at the four corners of the device. Once you have taken out the screws, you will be able to take off the cover easily.
- You will see two tabs at the bottom left corner of the console; move them slightly and take out the door button.
- Clean these areas with the brush and let them dry completely. Once it has dried, apply a small amount of grease on the button surrounding the slide screw. The stuck door problem has been fixed.
Fix gamecube games
- The first thing to do would be to look for any scratches at the bottom side of the game. A gamecube game disc is very similar to a normal CD or DVD and therefore cleaning it also involves much the same process.
- Use a toothpaste and cotton swab to clean the game disc by rubbing on the scratch gently. You can wash the disc in water and then dry it thoroughly with a soft cloth.
- Buy a commercial cleaner or a CD repair kit and follow the instruction printed on the packet for cleaning the disc.
- You can also use a soft cleaning cloth used for cleaning glasses; work it in left to right motion.
- If the scratch still exists, go to your local video store to get the disc refinished.
Follow these steps mentioned above and fix your gamecube at home yourself. You will be able to save a lot of money too that would have otherwise have been spent if you had taken it to a repair shop.
