How to Fix Headlight

Headlights of your car or bike often get oxidized or the bulb gets damaged. To fix such problems you don’t need to take your car to the local automotive repair centre, you can fix such common problems using the simple methods at your home. Get a headlight repair kit from a nearby hardware store or auto parts store and learn how to fix headlight.

Fixing oxidized headlights

This is the most common problem that almost all of us come across. The effort you need while cleaning an oxidized headlight depends upon the extent of oxidation. Oxidation of the headlights is basically the cloudiness of the screens or the glasses that cover the tubes present inside the headlights.

  • First identify whether the oxidation has occurred on the inner surface of the glass or on the outer surface.
  • If the damage is on the inner surface then you need to remove the glasses and clean them from inside. Most of the times oxidation occurs on the external surface of the glass.
  • To clean the glass of the headlight, apply the cleaning solution to clean it. Take a piece of cloth and dip it into the cleaning solution and clean the lens or glass of the headlight.
  • Before starting the cleaning process apply masking or painting tape around the area as some of the harsh chemicals in the cleaning solution may damage the paint of your car.
  • When you have cleaned the lens completely and you are satisfied with your work then, to keep your glasses clean for a longer period, apply car wax or silicon sealer on the glasses. This will make the glasses glittering.

Tips

  • Clean the lens of your car regularly to get a clear visibility while driving.
  • If the lenses are oxidized so much that it is impossible to clean them, then replacing them is the only option that you have.

Fixing burned out lights

Headlights of the car may burn out due to continuous use. They must be replaced; you can replace them yourself with minimum effort.

  • Determine the type of headlights that your car is using. If you are unable to make out the type of headlights, take help from an expert. Some cars use replaceable halogen bulbs while in others the entire headlight needs to be replaced.
  • To replace the halogen bulbs inside the headlight, remove the old bulb by opening the hood of the headlight. To remove the old bulb, twist the plastic ring and pull out the bulb. Insert the new bulb into the holder carefully. Start your car and see whether the bulb is working properly and fix the hood.
  • To replace the entire headlight you need to unscrew the entire case of the headlight from the car using a screw driver. These screws are very tiny so be careful that you don’t lose any of them. There may be some wiring behind the case, so do no pull the case harshly. Pull the headlight out and remove the wiring carefully to unplug it. Get a new headlight that is of the same type as the previous one or a headlight that fits properly into the room made for fitting the headlight. Place all the arrangements and check whether the headlight functions properly.
